General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

    A working, functional command prompt that leads you through commands a la RHINO or cad.

  2. Double+ character Hotkeys. Some added flexibility for hotkeys.

    The name says it.

    EA for element attach or EAT for another hotkey etc...
    ED for element detach etc...

    Though the above might not be a useful key for everyone, that's not the point. Added flexibility would be helpful to be able to dig farther and more intuitively into the benefits that hotkeys provide, and to keep commonality between different software. Right now we have to apply weird logic to organize everything and no organization is perfect as we are too limited.

  3. Vertex Color Map viewport support

    I use Vertex Color pretty extensively to create assets for Unreal 4, and it'd be great if Vertex Color Map actually rendered properly in the viewport. Any improvements to Vertex Color in general would be nice but the lack of viewport rendering makes it reeeeeeeally tedious for game art.

  4. Node based DCM, data channel modifier

    This modifier would greatly benefit from being node based. Like pFlow or something you could just have a click of a button to open up a new floating window with the node graph inside it.

    You get a better understanding of what is happening that way. The ability to pipe the same input into different operators and what not.The blending modes would be alot clearer too they could be a visible node instead of a hidden right-click menu.

    Layer based is not the way forward!

    Now I should mention that I haven't really delved into the new modifier yet but…

  5. Art Render needs to support both GPU + CPU

    The Art Render is totally useless without GPU support. Too slow! Too grainy! iray does not work fully since 2015 and a fix is nowhere in sight. If AD is going to abandon iray then add GPU support for the Art Render instead!

  6. Camera Tools as in Maya

    If you didn't know, the Camera tools in Maya are incredibly powerful; take a look at them:

    View > Camera tools >

    - Tumble
    - Track
    - Dolly
    - Zoom

    and so on.... click the options box. They are powerful for 1 reason - you can adjust the sensitivity!

    I cannot tell you how subtlety is EVERYTHING and camera angles and shots are like a silent hero in good picture making.

    please, Please, Please, implement this into 3DS Max!

    This is no small issue because 3ds max has a no options for navigation sensitivity.

  7. Animate the length(growth) of the line (maybe in sweep modifer)

    In animation, sometimes often need to do lines to growth.

  8. Easy animate and copy any parameter

    So you can quickly put the keys, delete them, see what parameters are animated in general and in the current frame.

    Animation of any parametrs can be copied from one parameter to another, from one object to the other. To do this need additional (it can be open) object properties window.

  11. Finding and filtering in the track-view-pick-window

    When working with expression-controllers there will be the time to assign a scalar-variable to a controller of another object. To pick this controller the Track-View-Pick-Window pops up and gives an overview of available tracks and objects in the scene but it is very annoying to find an object and its tracks in the current treeview since you sometimes need to dig through a long hierarchy of linked objectnames down to the last node. And this gets even more annoying in complex rigs with many nodes with similar names...

  12. max 2017 Trackview - Reimplement controller-icons on tracks

    With 2017 the icons in the trackview that indicate the type of controller applied to a track are missing. Getting these back again would make live of a rigger way better again when working in max2017 since it is possible to find controllerrelated issues faster like undefined controllers that can cause errors in a projects pipeline.

  13. Boolean split (imprint) improvement!

    I tested out the new boolean system in 3dsmax 2017, but I was a bit dissappointed because I was not able to do what i intended to do. Basically I want to split one object where it intersects with another mesh to create a new meshes. However, the imprint function only cuts the mesh, but it doesn't split the edges so I can't easily select the new faces as elements after, I have to select each and every polygon. I wisih you could add the option to split the mesh and keep both sides, but split into new elements. If…

  14. Backburner - Add "Material Override" to Edit Settings options

    99 times out of 100, I am using the Material Override feature to do an AO pass.

    Right now I have to double up my renders: one for the diffuse renders and one for the AO pass, even though these are basically identical renders. (I know about Render Elements but sometimes that doesn't work with the materials I'm using.)

    It would be nice if you could simply wait for the renders to complete, then check a "Use Material Override" box and re-start those jobs from the Queue Monitor.

  16. Make Backburner open source, or at least progammable.

    Among many other I have the feeling that not much development is put into backburner in the last years. I mean it's still missing a 64 bits release and it does not even handle ipv6 at all. In 2016 it's just unacceptable. As everyone knows, 3Ds Max has a great community that shares a lot.

    So how about making backburner at least partially open source. So pipeline developers can use it as a cost-efficient way to automate all kinds of stuff for freelancers and smaller studios.

  19. switch active viewport with hotkey, not viewport the cursor is over

    Using a wacom digitiser, I go crazy using hotkeys to switch the view of the current viewport, as when I go to hit the keyboard my cursor has moved over another viewport and that's the one that gets switched. I'm pretty sure I remember MAX behaving differently in much older versions. The hotkeys for switching viewports to left/front/perspective etc. acted upon the currently active viewport, not the one your cursor happens to be over. I'm sure this is OK using a mouse (can't test, don't have one) but it's been annoying me for years with a digitiser. It's obviously not…
