General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

  1. Move detached Command Panel

    When I detach Command Panel to other monitor, when I connect throught remote desktop I can't move the Command Panel to primary monitor with win key + arrow.

  2. Network job assignement window resizable

    The window/dialog Network job assignement (net render) is not resizable and I can't access "Submit job" button when I connect throught remote desktop with lower resolution.

  3. RAM caching for custom image file sequences used for Viewport Backgrounds

    When trying to roto animate to footage, stepping one frame at a time often doesn't cut it when checking work. This was addressed a long time ago by Bobo in the days of SD. Without this, animating elements for VFX and I'm sure other applications is painful, especially at resolutions higher than HD 1080

  4. Screen relative Ghosting option

    while the existing viewport ghosting tool is somewhat useful at times when examining object animations relative to world space, it would be great to have screen/camera relative ghosting so you could see how an object may be swimming around in frame. This would be useful for applications where you are animating a camera to follow/cover action of vehicles in motion

  5. Add gradient color control for ghosting

    the two color options for before and after generally just mush together limiting its usefulness in analyzing animation. Allowing for user defines gradients would help where each ghost image samples form a single point on the gradient..not a range of gradient across any single ghost sample

  6. Add descriptions in the creation graph

    There should be a place where we can add a description of what our node network is doing within the Creation graph.

    Groups Could be a good place to put it. Similar to a blockquote in any programming language.

    ie. Group title "spread", Group description "randomly moves the objects in XY while maintaining their Z coordinates"

    The creation graph is a very welcome addition to 3dsmax, but complex networks can quickly be daunting to apprehend. This will help figuring ou which part does what.

  7. Internalize useful MCG modifiers and toolsets

    If possible and we haven't any problem in max performance specific max start up, in every new versions or extensions internalize some popular and useful MCG tools to max so these tools can install with max installer and open with max from startup like some start up plug-ins.

  8. Favortie Path (in save, load, import, ...)

    Add a way to save favorite path to a project in save, load, import, etc menu.
    When we save a path we can choose if the path is save in every menu or choose which one.

  9. Speed Graph (found in After Effects)

    The speed graph is an essential tool used to refine animation in After Effects. 3DSmax would be well served by having a similar tool. (See an example of the power of the speed graph here: https://vimeo.com/15568529)

    Max already has the ability to apply an ease curve via track view but it does not sync keys with the property to which it is applied.

    We feel this would be a tremendous addition to the 3DSmax toolset.

  10. Hair and Skin Shaders for iray

    iray needs a realistic hair shader. Also a good subsurface scattering skin shader like the one for mentalray.

  11. Work with Chaos group to add a PAUSE button to the V-ray engine. PLEASEEEEEEEE

    When rendering with V-ray there is no way to pause frame buffer. Just Cancel. Make it so, Number One!

  12. Choose image filetype in Render To Texture dialog not the usual image file type dialog box

    When having multiple objects selected and wanting to Render To Texture with them, it's very frutrating to not be able to choose the image output filetype since the "..." button is grayed out from the 'File Name and Type' under the Output rollout. My current workaround is to select each object one by one and type in or choose the bitmap type. Would be nice to be able to choose the image type from a rollout or to just be able to push the button in order to change it when multiple objects are selected.

  13. Animatable region render window

    Would be nice to be able to animate the region window when rendeirng. Some 3rd party renderers don't support region types like "Selected" so the region window can't track with objects. Time is wasted rendering when making the region window large enough to cover an objects movement through the whole animation. Being able to animate the placement and size of the region window would solve this problem.

  14. View Normals on an editable poly

    Currenty we have to add an Edit Mesh modifier in ordrer to see normals. There needs to be a toggle on the ribbon or elsewhere to show normals on selected.

  15. Bifrost Max bridge

    A bridge from Max to Bifrost. Doesn't need to be huge - if we can build scene graphs with the slate editor and read back PRT files, this would be a really great start.

    In Create panel, it would be a good idea to add a decal object, similar to the unreal engine :

  19. 3DS Max LT

    Develop a version of 3DS Max similar to Maya LT.

    Design the software to feature game development methodologies and remove unnecessary CAD / Inventor type elements.

    In many ways the program could function like an updated version of GMAX to work with modern development pipelines.

  20. BUG - Drag-Drop files into Scene Xref Dialog also merges some of those max files

    If I select one or more max files in windows explorer and I drag-drop them into the Scene Xref dialog, they all appear as scene xrefs as expected, but one or more of those max files ALSO gets merged into the scene, resulting in duplicate geometry. This merging behavior is unwanted and is IMHO a bug. This bug has been present in several versions of Max and I keep complaining about it.
