General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

  3. Ability to change file output type in Backburner

    Ability to change file output type (e.g jpg, tga, etc) from within Backburner & have that change synchronized to render element outputs as well.

  4. PhysX 3.x support in 3ds max

    Currently 3ds Max (Still) uses PhysX 2.8.x (2014/2015) sadly and PhysX 3.x SDK (at the moment of writing it is 3.3.1) was out since May 2011 (3ds max 2012 was out at that time)

    Unfortunetly mCloth and mParticles (which was added in SAP for 2013 and is build-in since 2014+) still uses physx 2.8.x SDK.

    Due to that using NVIDIA's PhysX plugin in PhysX 3.x mode crashes 3ds Max when using mCloth and mParticles becouse they are outdated and havent been updates still to PhysX 3.x.

  5. Animated Sweep modifier for motion graphics purposes

    Please add more parameters for Sweep modifier , like Offset along the spline and to be able to animate Sweep start and end on the spline , that would help a lot in motion graphics and to avoid using the old Path Deform modifier which has only a few parameters .

  6. Restart Improvement and development of feature to character studio toolset (Biped)

    for a while, the well known Biped as been left aside. For some, it is considered as done and for some others, left to die but personally, I think character studio is not about to die and not finished at all. I still consider Character Studio to be the best out of the box solution for games and still used a lot in the industry (been in game industry for 12years now and 90% of my career as an animator, I spent it with biped. but the issue is we havent seen anything new for ages. the motion mixer is…

  7. a tool to resize bitmap textures based on camera distance

    Texture optimization is a big deal in architectural visualization. Right now we manually resize textures in an image editor. However it would be awesome if 3dsmax had an automated tool to resize actual bitmaps based on camera distance. It is a hard thing to go over when there are way too many textures.
    This tool, should have dial-in boxes which identifies a pixel range for a specific distance that is again, given by the user.

    Even better if the user can give multiple ranges, for multiple distances.

    with an option like ; For selected objects or for the whole scene.

  8. PolyDraw needs a whole loop placement tool

    Let me elaborate, it's a method available in almost all other re-topology systems out there, including one of Max's plugins called wrapit, it allows to simply place loops on cylindrical shapes(like a hand, leg, even body) and the new topology would be generated between each pair of loops, it's the fastest way to go about retopologizing those parts of the body, and unfortunately it's not present in the PolyDraw.

    It's unfortunate because PolyDraw is a great tool and you can do a lot with it already.

  9. Make the mParticles collision shape updatable via mP Shape Operator

    If you currently spawn additional particles child particles always keep the old collision shape from the parent particle. But oftentimes you need a different shape for the new particles. You can instance different shapes with the "shape instance" operator but even when using another "mP shape" operator the collision shape cannot be updated. Please make the collision shape updatable!

  10. mental ray Object Light shader

    There is an existing shader built in mental ray from version 3.11 that allow to emit direct light from geometry.

  11. Scene Diagmostic and Optimization Tool

    I would like to see a tool that can go through a scene file in 3ds max and report a variety of statistics such as number of objects and other assets, how those items are broken down such as object type (geometry, spline, camera), edit poly, mesh, spline, patch, or NURBS, light types, cameras, helpers, etc. This should also include materials, what type, map types and map sizes. A listing of plugins used such indicate native and 3rd party types and what they are assigned to.

  12. Better way to edit hotkeys

    It would be great if there was a faster way to edit hotkeys. 3d coat does this in a really simple manner where you hover over the button or menu command you want to add a hotkey to and then press "end" and then the keyboard command you want to bind it to.
    It's a really quick and intuitive way to bind hotkeys and you don't have to search the customize hotkey menu every time. I find it frustratingly slow to find the button in the customize hotkey window and what I'm suggesting wouldn't be a replacement but more an…

  14. Make SSS map generation multi-threaded

    e.g. use a "Subsurface Scattering Fast Skin Material" and render with MR... You will see that the "finalgather map generation" used only one CPU core :(

  15. Scene explorer to be able to split in 2

    It would be really useful to be able to split the scene explorer in two (just grab the lower edge and create a second part where you see a different scroll of the list).

    When there are too many objects and layers in the scene it can become complex to select and drag. Being able to divide the explorer in 2 will boost productivity.

    Also it's nice that is dockeable but I'd like to dock more stuff above or below. Right now you can only dock windows side by side (take a look at Unity or Blender, the docking is…

  16. Improved cleaning and sorting of scene materials

    When importing models from Revit or Sketchup, which automatically create and asign multi-materials to obejcts, the material handling soon becomes a complete mess, with a tens or even hundreds of multi-matierals.
    Most of these multimats contain copies of the same material (especially if imported from Revit), and therefore the "Put material to scene"-tool will not replace all materials with the same name.
    We need a way to easily clean up and replace scene materials.

    An option to make instances of all materials with the same name would be a start.
    Also, having Max consolidate similar multimaterials (resassigning mtl-IDs) would also…

  17. Accelerate Edged Faces (and Wireframe)

    In the later versions of Nitrous, "edged faces" and "wireframe" modes are significantly slower than the "shaded" mode. Please try to improve this.

  18. Scalable modifier stack

    Give us the ability to stretch the stack modifier window or detach it in a separate window.

    This will come in handy when you have a large number of modifiers.

  19. 3d Text for motion graphics

    3ds Max needs to also consider the Graphics designer for film titles & Text Motion Graphics workflow, could do with a more animated control such as kerning, tracking, leading, and the bevel tools could be simplified so that there are better options to create 3d text very quickly

    perhaps some basic templates of sample text with various bevels, anything that enables the artist to reduce the amount of unnecessary steps and increase productivity

  20. Basic Built-In Sculpting.

    Many users have to move back and forth (in Mudbox and the likes) just for basic operations. It doesn't have to be a full Mudbox inside max kind of thing, just having the main (most used) 8 brushes and some detail projection features, would bring max at the same level of Software like Modo (or Blender) where you can get away with quite a lot, without having to move to a separate sculpting application, and, also start working in new unconventional ways in order to get the final result (like "sculpting" Hard Surfaces and do a quick retopo with something…
