General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. Foreground environment map

    Just like you can add a background map, it would be great to be able to add a foreground map which can be rendered over the top.

  2. Turn realistic viewport mode OFF by default

    Why is it that if you save a scene in with wireframe views then reopen it later on and F3, it defaults back to Realistic? It doesn't remember that you just had shaded as your viewport mode, and I really can't tell you how enfuriatingly time wasting this is Autodesk. Realistic mode is useless at best, so why is it your default after starting max or any file?
    Can you at least be considerate to your long standing users and not impose these airheaded viewport display modes on them. Here we are 2 whole years on since nitrous released and…

  3. Slate Material Editor - Export / Import Current SME State In Full

    I feel 3DSMax project workflow could really benefit from having functionality to Export / Import entire Slate Material Editor states, Including all settings, tabs and the materials therein.

    Currently we only have basic .MPL file Export / Import, which contains a fairly useless amount of SME configuration data.

  4. Shader that could use isoline wireframe

    Rendering Subdiv with wireframe becomes reasonless because of the high poly count. You can code a shader that can read the isoline wireframe for rendering.

  5. Modifiers Opacity

    One little/great thing - opacity of modifiers (like Photoshop layers, Mudbox layers, etc). Great solution for all various 3D artists.

  6. Improving Poly Draw Tools

    1 The tools in Freedom tab, naming - Branches, Strips and is aligned to screen which makes it extremely difficult to achieve desired results. It should be aligned to the surface normals like the Surface tool. Because without that its hard to use Strips on curved mesh for example a face and you have to make sure you are drawing on the surface with normals facing you.

    2 Strips should have an option to autosnap and weld to earlier meshes drawn using these tools.

    The same for 'poly draw splines' because at most events it is not possible to draw…

  7. Visually proper Interface

    From years now I m waiting and just waiting for max to have a robust quality dedicated interface like in maya or almost all 3d packages. The max interface which is a mixture of windows and its modified UI elements like the drop down menus, list boxes and its scroll bars makes anyone annoyed after using it 14 hours a day. Even free ones like Blender has its own n Max is one of the most expensive and still has an visual appearance so poor. Or atleast you can make the whole package same as Graphite modeling Tools style.

  8. Adapt mental ray FG for animations

    Afrer 3 years of using mental ray I switched to vray. Because mental ray does not have proper fast algorithms to calculate cache for scenes with moving object + moving camera.

  9. x64 (multithreaded) UI and mesh operations

    Now, in 3ds max 2015 x64 sp2 every operation (except rendering) uses only one core. Please rewrite UI. I want max to be fast.

  10. Arch & Design materials: Option to change RGB values between "0-1" or' 0-256"

    If I ever want to select a colour from a bitmap to use in a Arch & Design Material, I have to go to photoshop, open the bitmap and select the colour with the eye dropper. Photoshop provides each colour channel in 0-256 format, however, Arch & Design Material colour channels are in 0-1 format. I have to manually convert each channel with a calculator! A button that converts Arch & Design Material RGB colour channels to 0-256 would solve this problem, or better yet, a way of grabbing a colour directly out of Photoshop.

  12. Color Correction Feature

    Collection of overall Color Corrections feature

    Contrast Spinner in Color Correction needs higher maximum
    Currently the new Max 2009 Color Correction Map's Contrast feature has a max value of 100. This is rather limiting.
    For example, place a noise map set to fractal in the Color Correction map. Set the contrast to 100. Notice how you still have a lot of grey in the map. Now try adding a key to the contrast value, then go into trackview and set the key which is currently at a value of 100 to a value of 1000. Notice how the image is…

  13. render to texture selected faces

    we want to do "render to texture" only some selected faces to our model
    and not the whole model
    can this feature be applied at the next 3Ds max versions?

  15. Stop reloading/checking for bitmaps each time you do basic operations

    Ever worked with LOTS of BIG bitmaps across the network ? Everything becomes a pain to work with ( though i checked "do not reload" bitmaps). Seems like opening the mat editor forces a full check, clicking on ANY option in the mat editor forces a check. Heck, working in Clay mode seems the only way to use the viewport without having some random reload or check.... (Still using 2014 btw, perhaps you improved it in 2015..)

  16. Multi Material/Map

    Think this as a enhanced version of multi-sub material with more options. Such as...

    1) Custom spinner
    allow users apply a sub-material on the whole object.
    Then, users can use Multi material as "Switch" material.

    2) Random checkbox / Seed spinner
    Now add random checkbox next to "Custom" spinner.
    Multi material become "Random" material.
    Multi material will pick one of sub material and apply to the object.

    3) ObjectID
    This will be handy too.

    4) User Property
    Lets say I set an user property called "brick" and assign number 1-7.
    Then I make a Multi material with 7 sub material. …

  17. Add auto Alignment/Snapping functionality to the 'Select and Place' tool

    This would be similar to Adobe Illustrator in which while you are transforming a shape in the canvas it's center point(pivot in our case) and bounding box automatically detect and briefly snap to those of the other shapes, a temporary line shows the two points that are aligned together at the time.

    Select and Place is a very useful and very fast layout tool, but it works in a freehand fashion, with this functionality we would have a very fast layout tool which can also be very precise at the same time.

  18. Dimensions

    Add a native Dimension tool to 3ds Max. This could be an update to the Tape Measure helper, or a new tool. Would like at least as much functionality as in Bobo's DIMaster Script.

  19. material nested grouping in Material Explorer

    Material nested grouping in Material Explorer.
    Materials are scene elements, and they also need to be organized, like objects in viewport.
    Now it's possible for objects in viewport, but how about materials.
    It you have lots of materials in scene, how you can organize them without nested grouping.

  20. Nitrous Display Resolution for Bitmaps needs GROUPS

    We work with 10k+ pixel-textures, basicly DWG-plans as a .jpg since 3DStudioMax still cannot handle a big amount of DWG-splines. (Our plans are really... really... big. - URBAN STUDY COMPANY)

    So we want the ability to have certain bitmaps to display as a higher resolution then the average 1500pixel textures who don't need to be that high!

    Every time we either have a way to heavy viewport because ALL textures are displayed as 10k+ textures. Or we have to low settings which makes our plans unreadable.

    PLEASE CREATE THIS GROUPING-ABILITY FOR TEXTURE RESOLUTIONS

    Now we only have background/procedural/texture-bitmap option.
