General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. bring back Lock/Zoom pan in viewports

    While the 2D Pan Zoom Mode is a great feature that has been added for the camera, the Lock Zoom Pan mode has been taken out for the last few versions for no reason. When you press Alt+B in any viewport but the camera you can see the empty space under Setup where Lock Zoom Pan was but it's not there anymore. Is there a new way I'm not aware of to put an image in the background of a viewport (not camera) and zoom on it? Yes I could map it on a plane but if I want to…

  2. Support for V-ray materials when rendering via the A360 Cloud from 3ds Max.

    Many use Vray with 3ds Max as a standard workflow for production. It would be nice if A360 supported Vray materials when rendering to the Cloud. Thanks.

  3. Modifier Stack Selection Override

    An option to define where the focus should be on the modifier stack each time you select an object.

    Say I have an object "Box001" with various modifiers, an "edit poly" and then a "turbosmooth" on top, with the proposed option I will be able to define that every time I select "Box001" the default modifier selected in the stack will be the "edit poly" instead of the top most modifier, in this case, the turbosmooth.

    I would really like to have a road tool implemented in 3ds max. Say you already have a terrain in your scene and want a nicely conformed road in there. Not just on top, but dynamically (or not) conformed with parametric cuts and fills. Like this: select the road tool, choose road preset, draw road like you would draw a spline, or as simple as in sim city/cities:skyline. Where two roads pieces meet, a parametric preset based intersection object will be made.   9. 2017 track view : curve editor RGB mismatch with rotation orders

    RGB icons have been added to the xyz channels in the left panel of the curve editor. As expected x=red, y=green, z=blue. However if you change the rotation order of an object/control, lets say zxy, the RGB icons don't change so you end up with z=red, x=green, y=blue. This is super confusing when you glance over to select a different track and the color isn't consistant. Heres a screen grab to clarify:

  10. integration of CAT system with Crowd and Delegate

    This new population tool is really NOT useful...while there is already a sophisticated tool like crowd and delegate. There are lots of things you can add to it. Imagine integration of CAT system to it.for example it's really nice to assign so many CAT characters to delegates and pick those delegates as Nodes for walking/running path in CAT MOTION layer in one click! and also two layers of walking and running can be set in one CAT MOTION layer and can be automatically assigned to the character by the Delegates speed.Would't it be awesome? or in any Crowd behavior some…

  11. Reopen floating windows from previous session

    Add an option to allow all floating windows like the Material Editor, Render Setup, etc that were open when you close Max to reopen on the next startup. This would be like AutoCAD's tool palettes retaining their visibility between sessions.

  13. Xref units mismatch acceptance

    Our 3d model library consists of files from many sources, and the scenes are often set to various System Units. When we xref these models into a project scene that has different units, we are asked if we want to Rescale the XRef Objects to the System Unit. When many models are being referenced, we have to hit the OK button for every one.

    I suggest one of two things should be implemented.

    1. At the initial loading of the XRef, whatever you select is then 'remembered' by 3ds Max, so there is no longer a prompt when loading the…

  17. New Complete Character Animation system

    Take the best from Biped & CAT to create a New Character Animation system to meet todays requirements (think how cool biped Was when it first came out). i.e. Full Human IK system - including artist friendly tools for animation of face / hands / hair / props / clothing - to mix in with 3dsMax animation curve/ragdoll/etc... oh and while your at it (yes I'm being cheeky) - include a Wide range of presets/animals - with procedural driven animation controls as well as keyframing and mocap - this MAY sound a lot.... but surely by now this what Max…
