General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

BUGS

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

SDK/Scripting Enhancements
This forum is about improvements to the SDK or Script-related.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can vote and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can vote on it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  2. Caddies need many changes

-First problem is that they center on the selection, which in theory sounds good but in practice you end up with the caddy covering up your selection in case it's a small one, or jumping to the side of the viewport if the selection extends beyond the viewing area. Much better, in my opinion, would be to have the caddies center on the mouse cursor and stay there, so there wouldn't be any need to chase them around. (This on top of having the "smart" behaviour as optional)

-Second, there's the issue of the text field on top of the…

  3. Possibility to revert to legacy UI

There should always be the possibility to revert to legacy UI, like going back to legacy Caddies, material selector etc...

I think there should be checkboxes to enable or disable new design features such as these, in the "Customize user interface" menu.

  4. Easy exchange of data between max , maya and softimage.

Most of the studios use different 3d app in their pipeline and they need to use fbx or other plugins to exchange their data for different apps. It would be handy if we have the one unique format to share between these apps.

  5. Controlling parameters for multiple maps with one node

I often create my diffuse, specular and bump maps off of one image in photoshop. When I bring them in to max, I have to resize all of them one at a time. It would be nice to have a way to set the size of all of them at once but still keep real world scale.

  6. Adjust exposure settings after render

Similar to the preview window in the exposure control settings, I'd like to be able to adjust exposure control in my final render after the render is complete. This functionality is similar to what is available in other renderers such as fryrender.

  7. Ability to alter the viewport when any dialogue box is showing

You are unable to pan/zoom/rotate the viewport when there's a dialogue box showing (for a number of them)
    eg mirror, array..

A dialogue box shouldn't prevent control of the viewport.

  8. UI 100% Customisation - Drag + Drop

I like the way Max is going with its UI customisation but I'd like to see it go a lot further:

Everything; tools/buttons/viewports/stack panel/all bars to be customisable using a simple drag and drop technique.

All colours/sizes/fonts can be altered in a simple manner.

  9. Hard Surface Modeling Improvements + Constraints to work on Loop Tools

I'd love to see more tools created to aid hard surface modeling.

The Loop Tool commands are great for modeling (Straight/Curve etc) but the constraints don't work on them (Edge/Face etc). I'd like to see all constraints work for these and for anything else when possible.

I've explained it in more detail here:

  10. Default Lighting - Render (Scene Lights Present)

A simple way to render with default lighting when there are lights already set up in the scene. It allows for quick test renders when scene lights aren't wanted.

Possible implementation: A radial box in the Render Window to switch between Scene Lights and Default Lights. This could also switch when changing the viewport setting: 'Illuminate With Scene Lights/Default Lights'.

  11. Unified Node Interface - For new tools

For all existing and upcomming node based tools there should be an unified and intelligent designed interacting node Interface. Existin Tools to unifiy are: Slate, Scematic View, PFlow.
    Following should be added:
Node based scripting and wireing (similar ICE or MotionBuilder relation contraint), Render management (like RenderFlow).
Especially Renderflow has a way better method for defining render-contetnt than the SceneState system.

  12. Ignore Backfacing

An option for Ignore Backfacing, ignoring what is behind the selection rather than only ignoring if it's facing in the opposite direction.

  13. Animation Layer UI

I don't how many people know that max has an animation layer system. Maybe it would get more popular and more usable if it would get an interface like in Motionbuiler or Maya

  14. Add Pen Attribute Holder

Paul Neale's script will be such a great little addition. Even if its just added as part of the bonus disk.

  16. Integrate Xray Unwrap and TexTools into the Unwrap UVW

Xray Unwrap using a great algorithm to auto pack uvs. It saves me dozens of hours of work and is very useful.

Textools is a great set of unwrapping tools but its a bit buggy.

If both toolsets were integrated into max it would yield faster better results for all artists.

  17. Analog interface brightness

In AfterEffects and Premiere there is a slider which controls the overall interface brightness. I would love to have that in Max as well so I can dim it down a bit when working late hours. The viewports should be unaffected or have a separate slider I think.

  18. drag and drop any parameter value from any object to any other object - pickwhip

Dragging and dropping any value from any parameter of any object to any other object's parameters (as opposed to copy-pasting values) - similar to the pickwhip in After Effects.

  20. Pushpin for Caddies

This is in no way saying I like the Caddies better that the old dialog boxes; however, the do look somewhat esthetically pleasing, but not practical. Anyway, if I am to be stuck with the caddies it would really be nice if someone would add a push-pin icon to the tool; that way they would not jump all over the place.
