"Intelligent" Autobackup (backup interval depending on scene size)
We wrote a script ages ago that let's you set 3 thresholds for file sizes that trigger differrent autobackup intervals. Is that possible to get in Max natively? If you are working in an 800MB max file you dont want autobackup to kick in every 5 minutes and the number of undo steps should be reduced along with it to keep things workable. So let's say a scene is smaller then 50MB do teh autobackup as often as possible (every 5min.), iof its between 51-150 do it every 30 minutes, and so on an so forth. maybe auto-disable it beyond 500MB.

Sometimes 3dsmax takes much longer than usual to save a file.
Search the internet and you will find many hits.
In http://area.autodesk.com/forum/t59979 there are a list of possible bugs.
Recently I had this problem. To solve it: startup a fresh scene and merge all objects from the problematic scene.
The best idea is IMHO to enhanced the status bar: Max should display the steps he doesn on save. So we can figure out what steps takes a long time.

Just wanted to post a quick idea for this. It would be really cool if 3D Studio Max could integrate a time-lapse preview of the visual changes associated with backup interval files. Similar to the time-lapse recording found within ZBrush. So users could scrub back and forth in a timeline of images to find the appropriate version.
