General Feature Requests
PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.
Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.
What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
- When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
- Users can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.
SDK/Scripting Enhancements
This forum is about improvements to the SDK or Script-related.

Allow disabling unneeded plugins, stdplugs
Mentalray , quicksilver , biped , fbx , hair etc are all loaded to ram always. removing them from stdplugs causes startup errors . Max should allow us to load/unload stdplugs and plugins as we need.

A fully node based scene editor
It would be nice to have a node based editor in which EVERY parameter of EVERYTHING could be connected. This could replace the wire parameter editor and make things much more elusive.

Catmull Clark Subdivision Surfaces
This subdivision method would have a number of advantages...

Procedural Textures
Gradient, Gradient Ramp, Tiles, Noise, Smoke, Water, Wood, Falloff etc...I would like to see more of these types of maps, and optimization and additional features in the existing maps.
As a side note, you could just hire Jerry Ylilammi, developer of BerconMaps, to make these improvements for you since he already has a head start!

Refreshing layer manager
Adding drag and drop, nested layers, layer group, docking hability, creating hierarchy by drag and droppping, Getting visible hierarchy inside it ...

Update the Unwrap Editor to use a modern display system
The unwrap editor is painfully slow. If you have more than a few thousand triangles displayed it is almost impossible to do any editing with slow redraws and updates. I think before any more updates are made to features you need to update the performance. What is the use of having features if it takes 1 minute plus to drag a face selection>

Unify shortcuts in different areas
Unify shortcuts from the standard to edit/editable poly and mesh (who wants M for meshsmooth??).
Its really annoying how the shortcuts are not consistent between different areas, why edit poly have to have different shortcuts from editable poly? And some bizarre ones like the "M" that always opened the material editor in max, I still can't believe someone decided to assign this shortcut to a destructive meshsmooth in editable poly... and this is just one example.
449 votesfor those people still don’t know, we have changed the default shortcuts for Edit Poly and Editable Poly, now they are using the same configuration!

drag and drop objects to layer
inside the layer manager, select and drag and drop object to another layer, without viewport interaction and other clicks
286 votesOur investigation has shown this to be something larger than a Small Annoying Thing. the idea has been moved to the General Features forum and will be merged with the “Refreshing layer manager” idea

Native 3ds max for Mac OSX
Since I and a lot of more users use Mac Osx as primary OS, a native 3ds max will be the most wonderful gift Autodesk could give. I am tired of using virtual machines (always limiting my hardware) or having to boot my Macpro with bootcamp only tou se 3ds max or revit. I am sure it will receive a lot of votes

viewport canvas - bodypaint replacement
enhancing viewport canvas to be something like maxon bodypaint, (with faster responce when using bigger textures, with projection things from part of image to a object, etc..)

Import preferences and settings from previous 3ds Max installs
I always do some keyboard, GUI and preferences customization when I install 3ds Max, and they're usually the same ones each time I upgrade. It would be very nice if 3ds Max could see and optionally import preferences and GUI-settings from existing installations.

better 3dsmax/composite integration
Better integration with 3dsmax : target camera, path contrain animation, precomp, better camera export fbx, 3dsmax framebuffer node inside composite, etc !!

UI 100% Customisation - Drag + Drop
I like the way Max is going with its UI customisation but I'd like to see it go a lot further:
Everything; tools/buttons/viewports/stack panel/all bars to be customisable using a simple drag and drop technique.
All colours/sizes/fonts can be altered in a simple manner.

Fix object hiding (hidden object no longer benefits performance)
3ds max 2012(nitrous mode)
3ds max 2013(nitrous and d3d mode)In these releases hiding objects no longer benefits viewport performance.
What is worse hidden objects completely kill animation playback performance since everything gets reevaluated every single frame whether or not it has anything to do with the animation, is hidden or is disabled. This means having things such as hair & fur for a character in the same file as the character itself (which I'd say is the first instinct of any character artist) is nearly impossible because it is weighing too heavy on these versions of max.

better performance skin
Make the skin modifier better performance.
109 votesour skin modifier is Multi-thread now (Skin has always used the DeformerProc which is by multithreaded by default. So all the point deformation calculation are multithreaded), so I changed this idea’s title and description. If you think the new title/description is not reflecting your idea, you may take those votes back/start a new idea.

Enhanced User Interface in Max
as the title says, we need an updated user interface, a fresh new look similar to maya & mudbox UI. (QT Based UI) without loosing the current layout
The enhanced user interface can make it more appealing to the eyes, Modern, cross platform, and adds more customizable workflow.

Dynamics Simulations!
I would kill for something like Maya Dynamics inside of 3DS max. Any sort of half-decent particle simulations - water, smoke, fire, etc.
Even though it isn't a particle system, the awesome fractal pattern that Maya uses for oceans would be a huge plus in 3DS Max - the ocean (lume) shader only goes so far......

GPU+CPU accelleration and Open CL
No better way to speed up the workflow than using all the horsepower in our machines. Both MR and iRay could benefit of gpu accelleration. And OpenCL would be compatible with either Nvidia and Ati

Caddies need many changes
-First problem is that they center on the selection, which in theory sounds good but in practice you end up with the caddy covering up your selection in case it's a small one, or jumping to the side of the viewport if the selection extends beyond the viewing area. Much better, in my opinion, would be to have the caddies center on the mouse cursor and stay there, so there wouldn't be any need to chase them around. (This on top of having the "smart" behaviour as optional)
-Second, there's the issue of the text field on top of the…
