General Feature Requests
PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.
Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.
What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
- When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
- Users can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

Update Camera Interface & Functionality
The default camera in 3ds max has been little changed since the program hit the market and it's long past its use by date for professional renderings. Many of the settings are compromises between a digital sensor and a film frame. We need to be able to manage and treat the 3ds camera camera as a real camera rather than the compromised camera it currently represents.

edit poly vs editable poly vs e.mesh
consolidate all e poly functions: why is edit poly different from editable poly and why are their hot keys different!? Add crease function to editable poly, etc. Give mesh the same options as poly: why can't I select border in mesh? The command panels should be identical, too.

Interoperability
Please make 3DS Max even MORE interoperable with AutoCAD and Maya! (Or pls make Maya even more interoperable w AutoCAD and 3DS Max!) fbx format is great, but still not 100%. Film The departments of Art and Pre Vis get closer with every production. It'd save so much time and angst if our files just shared perfectly.

Curve Editor VERY laggy
The Curve Editor, since it's revamping in Max9 (2009?) is very slow. In particular the object tree on the left pane seems to be the problem, when several animated objects are selected navigating that panel is very slow, the refreshing rate is abysmal.
Also playback with the Curve Editor open and any object selected is horrible, the frame rate drops to a crawl; again the problem seems to be the left panel that refreshes after every frame. Scrubbing the time slider is not a problem, but as soon as the Play button is used it breaks down.

Hard Surface Modeling Improvements + Constraints to work on Loop Tools
I'd love to see more tools created to aid hard surface modeling.
The Loop Tool commands are great for modeling (Straight/Curve etc) but the constraints don't work on them (Edge/Face etc). I'd like to see all constraints work for these and for anything else when possible.

Free fast modelling mode (like G.SketchUp with dimension)and exit this mode in Editable Poly or mesh
-Have you ever tried Google SketchUp?
-How fast you can output your idea not just only hand-sketch, but also 3D sketch?
-For edit and Free style, 3dsMax is more power than sketchUp. Isn’t it?
-But for free FAST sketch, SketchUp is much faster than 3ds max with true dimension. Isn’t it?

Right click in UI elements to add/delete keys
If you are at a frame you should be able to right click in any spinner and choose "add key" or "delete key" without opening the track or curve editor.

Rotate Reference option with 2D and 3D Snapping Capability
Max has a fairly rich set of snapping features; however, I find they fall short when it comes to object rotation. To fix this, I think it would be cool if Max could “Rotate” by “Reference” like AutoCAD; additionally, it would be nice if the guys at Autodesk could also incorporate a way to achieve 3D object snap rotation – like Rhino. The 3D object snapping capability derived from Rhino would allow one to define the axis of the object to be rotated while picking two reference points (from and to) to rotate by. Backburner Additions
A few additions to Backburner would be greatly appreciated. Here are a few ideas:
1. Ability to flag distributed bucket rendering as a job
2. Some sort of record keeping option for information such as overall render time per user/project, jobs per user/project, average usage etc
3. A basic built in calender, so that multiple users of a renderfarm can easily allocate time slots for jobs. Then allow backburner to manage the initiation of jobs based on those entries39 votes -

User Interface, workflow, modifiers, ribbon and icons
The UI for max is getting bigger as newer tools become implemented. Some new tools are now in a ribbon browser called "Graphite Modeling Tools" while others are in the old Command Panel. And some old tools like Selection for editable polys are in both locations! Doesn't that seem like a waste?
What is the future User Interface for 3ds Max?
I hope to see less mouse clicks, less icons and a more intuitive way of approaching a 3ds max scene.

Merge 3ds max and 3ds max Design product lines -- PLEASE
Don't make users choose between two nearly identical packages which cost the same price. Viz used to make sense because it was stripped down AND it cost less.
Now we have to decide what we want to give up. The current policy of dividing the product line for marketing reasons is idiotic and not customer-centric.
Just combine both packages into one singular "3ds max". During install you can give us options to not install certain elements, but users should not be forced to choose between these two almost identical product lines.

Eliminate such categories as editable mesh, editable poly, editable spline and patch
3ds max work flow would be improved significantly if the editable mesh, poly etc. would be merged into one. As a user I do not care what category an object is. I just need access to sub-object tools. As long as I have them it doesn't really matter what editable category it is. I am guessing the editables are there to provide some kind of management system to all the sub-object tools. Remove the stupid "Jewel" button which takes up 25 px of useful viewport space
As the title says - Remove the stupid "Jewel" (aka clown) button which does nothing but taking up 2 rows of useful space horizontally (crucial for people with wide screen monitors).
Who came up with this stupid UI idea? Pro software shouldn't look like MS Office. What was the idea behind putting this big stupid button? I can't find any purpose? What does it do better than the old "File menu"? I don't want it in my upper left corner anymore!
