General Feature Requests
PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.
Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.
What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
- When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
- Users can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.
SDK/Scripting Enhancements
This forum is about improvements to the SDK or Script-related.

Viewport tear off
Be able to detach a viewport to it's own floating window. Optionally maximize that viewport. This would allow you to use a second monitor just for a single viewport, this would be most awesome.

Better support and integration for DirectX shaders
Viewport DirectX shaders are limited and buggy in many areas. They don't work in Nitrous, shadows can be very flimsy, compile times can be high, scene effect loader has not been updated for years (!!), SSAO does not play nice with transparency, transparency sorting

Navigation rotation around 'pick point'
Please add another rotation mode to allow rotating around the mouse cursor (the point on the surface under the cursor), like you can in Cinema4d, 3dCoat and others.
This would be a fourth rotation mode and an addition to the current 'Orbit', 'Orbit selected' and 'Orbit SubObject'.
It's simply a MUCH more intuitive way of working.

Fix object hiding (hidden object no longer benefits performance)
3ds max 2012(nitrous mode)
3ds max 2013(nitrous and d3d mode)In these releases hiding objects no longer benefits viewport performance.
What is worse hidden objects completely kill animation playback performance since everything gets reevaluated every single frame whether or not it has anything to do with the animation, is hidden or is disabled. This means having things such as hair & fur for a character in the same file as the character itself (which I'd say is the first instinct of any character artist) is nearly impossible because it is weighing too heavy on these versions of max.

Add support for Direct3D 10 & 11
Add support for Direct3D 10 & 11 for materials, material editor, and viewport.

Improve Qualified Normals functionality
Qualified normals, introduced with Max 2011 HotFix 4 are a great idea. Unfortunately they are buggy and do not always work. On top of that, it requires users to manually edit an INI file.
Making the feature more robust + allowing easy UI access to toggle is an essential step to getting making this feature more usable.47 votes -
Viewport Guidelines
Guidelines to assist in modeling, something like Sketchup guideline.

Replace Viewport Background with a Imageplane that can store cached plates
Trying to play back a plate in the viewport-background can be a pain. Bad performance, no real 2d zooming, the plate isn't stored in the RAM and lots of other limitations. Maya's imageplane handles the job really good and I think max could use something similar.

Adaptive navigation zoom speed
Please make the zoom "adaptive" so it will slow down when zooming in on smaller objects, slow down when you're getting close to the object and speed up when far away.

Single Video Card Limit
Ability to utilize multiple video cards instead of one.

"Track-object view" for animated objects.
When you animate objects in the scene, it is difficult to adjust animation, following the object along his trajectory.
Zooming to the object, adjust anim, play..., pan-rotate-and-zoom to the new position of the object, re adjust anim, play..., re pan-re position, re adjust anim, etc....
It's too painful and waste of time to create a linked cam each time for each of them.
So, in the viewport you may select "track-object" and click on any object you want and automatically the viewport follow this object, right in the center of the view, anywhere in the scene.
So you can animate…17 votes -
Preview HDR images in Viewport
Maya shows HDR images on Viewport in reeltime! Why not Max? Its really cool for lightning...

Volumetric shader for Nitrous
A volumetric shader that can get data from objects, particles, atmospherics, Krakatoa and FumeFX caches, etc, and display it in the Nitrous viewport.

Better Animation Preview Playback
Change the viewport animation preview playback to work in ram player and enable ram player to scrub through each frame forward and back. This is critical when diagnosing what is going on in an animation and max has no way of doing this.
Right now the default playback option media player is horrible at this, you can attempt to output a quicktime friendly version but quicktime is only marginally better at scrubbing and max won't use quicktime only media player.

DOF and fog in viewport
XSI does some of it, lightwave does some of it.
Let s have it all in the nitrous viewport:
*realtime depth of field
* motion blur (that could be used with the DOF, not one or the other)
* FOG, it use to work with maxtreme drivers, but it s gone now.
* volumetric lights12 votessome of this is already being researched

Isolate per viewport
Get independent isolations depending the vewport, like in Softimage. You can see in one vewport only the object you are working on, while still see the whole scene on the others (great for contacts and interaction)

Allow show/hide of categories per window
Like in Maya where you can have one viewport window show things like shapes and another not show shapes. makes it easier to have rig controls visible in one window and not another.

Pseudocolour Scene Analysis Overlay
Some sort of pseudocolour overlay feature, which could analyse the current scene, and quickly display areas of high polygon concentration, object distribution and material types etc within the current viewport. Perhaps with similar visual results to the Mental Ray visual diagnostic options.

Transparency settings in Nitrous
Transparent materials in Nitrous refine over time to reduce the "noise look" depending on your hardware. Currently in Nitrous, better hardware equals better looking transparencies. That's unacceptable to users with older hardware. This idea will allow the user to toggle between nitrous transparency and pre-nitrous transparency.

background image scaling
Right now (as far as I know) image on the view port background comes in arbitrary scale. In practice I always end up mapping reference blueprints etc on geometry so I have control over its scaling and location. We have only control over whether the image zooms "locked down scale" but no control over what the size is.
However this doesn't work as well in some other ways.
Rhinoceros 3d has a really good way of setting a background image and afterward changing it.
You really should be able to set blueprints from top.side/front so they align correctly - currently…
