General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. better xref for animation without break the rig

    improve xref for animation without break the rig it self. and can update the rig without break the animation. animator cannot delete rig or it will pops up warning dialog

    "Merge by layer" and "Merge by selection set" would be real productivity boosters.

  3. Greater mudbox - max integration

    Workflow:
    -create base mesh in max
    -import into mudbox for further work
    -import back into max but so that it would come with a modifier stack that has a) base mesh as editable poly b) a "sculpt" modifier that works like turbosmooth as in you can increase or decrease subdivision level but it would mimic the exact way the model appears in mudbox

    then in between the base mesh and the modifier you can add skin and morphers and whatever basically.

    This way you can skip all the cumbersome displacement baking action if you wish to manipulate the lowpoly mesh…

  4. local-only containers

    I would like to have a container without "save as .maxc" feature.

    This is usefull for instance a bunch of objects and modify only one instance (add/remove/change objects in these container) and all instanced would be changed, too.

    All objects should be instanced and not stored as copies for optimized memory usage.

  5. File importer for Rhino.

    It is very difficult to import Rhino files into 3dsMax. I would find it extrememly useful to have a Rhino importer similar to the SketchUp one in 3dsMax.

    I think many architects would find this useful.

  6. interchange format like fbx

    Autodesk says FBX is not officially an exchange format per se. What are we supposed to use then to get more complex scenes into Maya or Houdini? We had our fair share of problems goign through every FBX build available and still coudnt get animation from Max into Maya smoothly. Some objects demanded FBX2006 to not cause trouble, others demanded FBX2011 etc. it is a bit messy to say the least.

  7. DPX Image Import

    Given that dpx format is one of the most popular fomats for vfx plates, it would be great to add READ support for them to Max. Currently we have to convert all of our plate images sequences over to another file type to be able to read them into Max as backgrounds or projection maps, etc which is kind of a drag. Any implementation of a dpx loader should support user defined color space (Linear vs Log), unlike the current Cineon reader which always assumes the incoming image is Log space (bad, so might as well fix that while you're…

  8. AUTODESK WAREHOUSE - Online Library

    Would be Awsome to search and import Models Materials and Maps directly from the web (Autodesk Seek/Google Warehouse).
    A lot of people use other softwares for the lack of this feature, expecially for Archdesign purpose.

    The possibility to make an interactive 3d model of the 3ds max scene. Like Graphisoft's BIMX. For PC/MAC and IPad.

    Having ability to export 3d models as PDF files would be quite good, because there are a lot of needs and quite few good third party tools (plugins)

  11. Override xref scene with new material

    Allow the overriding of an entire xref scene with a new material. This would be great for creating matte's or doing simple render tests where you need all the geometry from all artists but you might want them overriden as a gray material while your part of the project renders normally.

    This could be implemented in the xref scene dialog with a "override material" button that brings up the material selector or you could drag / instance a material to the button like you might do in the material editor..

  12. compare objects in a scene during a merge

    for example, offer the possibility to compare the name of similar objects in two scenes, maybe even get a glimpse of the number of polygons, textures applied ...

  13. Automatically add metadata when image is saved.

    I would like to have a function that automatically saves metada to the image.
    The data should be:
    Rendered view
    Preset used
    SceneState
    Information about lights
    and more, the user should be able to customize.

    The problem I am having is when I render multiple files from the same scene it gets hard to remember all the different settings that where used to create a particular image.

  16. XREF Scene - don't load nested files

    The master XREF scene should get checkbox within the XREF scene dialog for a per file "Don't Load Nested XREF's" this will ensure the master file controls exactly what is being loaded into the scene.

    Example. Several artists are working on the same project in separate XREF Scenes then another artist combines them via XREF Scene dialog into a master file that is rendered from. Artist A adds an XREF scene to their file of reference data but forgets to check "Overlay" which hoses the final rendered output in the master file. A better situation is to enable the master…

  17. Importing dwgs, fix the not being at 0,0,0 issue.

    When importing dwg files and more and more drawings are at OS coordinates.
    When imported the location issue corrupts imported lines.
    Basically the further the lines are from 0,0,0 the more corrupt the lines becomes.
    Having to move everything back to 0,0,0 means having autocad too.

  20. Make Morpher Compatible with FBX.

    When exporting Animation with morph targets from maya using FBX to UDK\Unreal it supports the transformations entirely and properly. Exports with such transforms from Max are not supported.

    I guess this is more of an I\O request than Animation.
