General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. Task Manager, Debugging type tool (to identify issues weighing down scenes)

    Max often becomes very sluggish as we all know. There should be a tool in Max which lets you see the processor usage broken down in a meaningful way. It would let you see if one object or one script controller or one modifier (like Skin) is causing an unusual amount of overhead. It would be similar to the Task Manager for windows, specifically the Processes Tab.

  2. Adding a modifier tab and a create object tab to ribbon

    I'd like to see a modifier tab and a create object tab added to the ribbon because actually we must use both command pannel and ribbon :-( Gavin created the super ribbon. He did something that can be quiete integrated as it is !

  3. Protractor measure between faces or edges

    It would by nice, if protractor tool would measure angles between edges or faces, not pivot points. It is achievable, but You must do some things first though (put objects together, move pivot points. etc.).

  4. Allow creation of 'small' objects

    We are a visualisation company. Our system units are always 1 unit = 1 meter, but quite often, our scene units are mm. If we create a 'small' object (a primative or a shape less than 100mm), we must create the object much bigger than we need to and then manually resize it to the small size we need, otherwise it just disappears. Very, very annoying.

  6. "Search 3ds Max Commands" Improvements

    The new search tool is great but it can use some improvements:

    -An adjustable history option, for instance the last 5 searched terms would always show up at the top of the list.

    -search query weighting, i.e. if there are 20 different actions with the word 'Spline' as part of them available in the list, they would get sorted based on the number of times they are executed, e.g. if 'Edit Spline' is my most executed search term it should get placed above other terms (Now this functionality might already be there in which case, nevermind)

    -Right now it doesn't…

  7. Presets for All Objects and Modifiers

    Everyone has their own preferences for their favorite objects and modifiers. For example, I very frequently want to create cubes that have 3 segments in each direction. Or when I apply a UVWMapping modifier I want it to default to box mapping. I suggest adding the preset system from the compound objects into every object and modifier. Also, when you save a preset, it should also create an ini file in a presets directory in max that can be edited by hand, which would allow for easily sharing and modifying those presets.

  8. Quadmenu has 4, Make it nMenu..

    Right-click, then u will see Quadmenu which has 2 at the top, 2 at the bottom. Plz make it to n menu. Hence people can create new fresh menus as many as they like to store shortcut tool they wish to categorize . Make it at least 4 menus. Maya has menu along the mouse. Make nMenu with Save menu for next version. Thank you.

  9. Select-mode by default

    Whenever right-clicking out of some other operation the cursor goes into move mode by default, making it easy to accidentally move something when selecting it.

  10. Possibility to revert to legacy UI

    There should always be the possibility to revert to legacy UI, like going back to legacy Caddies, material selector etc...

    I think there should be checkboxes to enable or disable new design features such as these, in the "Customize user interface" menu.

  11. Randomizing Transformations and Parameters

    It would ne really great to have a tool which allows to randomize the transformations and parameters of multiple objects. Neil Blevins wrote an awesome script for randomizing transformations. Randomizing modifier parameters of multiple objects would be also really nice.

  12. Select by material affect multi/sub-mats

    It would be nice if you could have an option for the "Select by material" tool to select all objects with different multi/sub materials with that material within them.

  13. Unified Node Interface - For new tools

    For all existing and upcomming node based tools there should be an unified and intelligent designed interacting node Interface. Existin Tools to unifiy are: Slate, Scematic View, PFlow.
    Following should be added:
    Node based scripting and wireing (similar ICE or MotionBuilder relation contraint), Render management (like RenderFlow).
    Especially Renderflow has a way better method for defining render-contetnt than the SceneState system.

  14. make the "select from scene floating windows/select by name(shortcut h)" to run faster!

    there is a big lag after pressing the button or the hotkey "h", it would be nice to get faster response:)

  15. Register more inputs for custom controls. e.g. Mouse 4 & 5

    It would be nice to be able to set view controls to extra mouse buttons without using external software.

    Double clicking on a group opens the group up. Perhaps double clicking on an open group closes it

  17. Additional user interface information next to the gizmo (i.e. selection lock toggle icon next to the gizmo)

    - It would be nice to see if the selection lock toggle is on, the snap type, selection category (lights, geometry, etc) right next to the gizmo.
    - Other information could be sub-object level, etc. This could be customizable to have the info you mostrly need.

  18. Tweak tool

    I would like to have a tweak tool which moves/rotates/scales the selection in screenspace by pressing a key.

    It would be also ok for me if it would be possible to get and set the active axis of the gizmo with maxscript. this would allow me to create my own tweak tool :)

  19. repeat last action (G key in maya)

    In Maya you can press "g" to repeat the last action, whatever that may be, I think it would improve the usability and speed things up if implemented in 3ds max.

    Say I connected two vertices, then I select two more and could just press "g" to connect those two. Its useful if you need to do something multiple times and you dont have the action bound to a hotkey.

  20. spread sheet editor

    pretty self explanatory but, here we go.

    a spreadsheet editor where you can open a spread sheet, and put any properties of your scene objects lined up as a spread sheet .

    the main advantage of this is selecting multiple objects at the same time from list and changing a property of them numericly. it is like mass editing in your scene.
