PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. A fully node based scene editor

    It would be nice to have a node based editor in which EVERY parameter of EVERYTHING could be connected. This could replace the wire parameter editor and make things much more elusive.

  2. Unify shortcuts in different areas

    Unify shortcuts from the standard to edit/editable poly and mesh (who wants M for meshsmooth??).

    Its really annoying how the shortcuts are not consistent between different areas, why edit poly have to have different shortcuts from editable poly? And some bizarre ones like the "M" that always opened the material editor in max, I still can't believe someone decided to assign this shortcut to a destructive meshsmooth in editable poly... and this is just one example.

  3. Ability to "escape" any process or command

    I would like the ability to interrupt or escape any command or process. For example, entering very large values into some input boxes (usually by mistake) can cause Max to try and complete requests which will eventually cause a crash. The ability to stop Max processing these functions would avoid a crash. At the moment, only some processes allow you to cancel them, I propose all commands/processes should be interruptible.

  4. UI 100% Customisation - Drag + Drop

    I like the way Max is going with its UI customisation but I'd like to see it go a lot further:

    Everything; tools/buttons/viewports/stack panel/all bars to be customisable using a simple drag and drop technique.

    All colours/sizes/fonts can be altered in a simple manner.

  5. Caddies need many changes

    -First problem is that they center on the selection, which in theory sounds good but in practice you end up with the caddy covering up your selection in case it's a small one, or jumping to the side of the viewport if the selection extends beyond the viewing area. Much better, in my opinion, would be to have the caddies center on the mouse cursor and stay there, so there wouldn't be any need to chase them around. (This on top of having the "smart" behaviour as optional)

  6. Remove the ribbon enhance the command panel !

    Remove the ribbon interface ! Autodesk is wasting time now for roughly 4 years with this terrible interface. In this time they didn´t manage to make it fast nor does it look unified in it´s various states.
    Next to that the layout changes with each version.
    Important things are missing and will probably never make it into this interface (Softselection Preview for example). It feels clumsy and
    and is still slower than the old command panel. Instead they should
    focus on the command panel. Integrate the missing features that were
    exclusively integrated into the Ribbon and enhance the Command Panel…

  7. ribbon interface or command panel (one should go and one should remain)

    lot of modelling features are already there, but i m used too for command panel. just build modifier stack there (ribbon UI) and dispose command panel.

  8. Project Folders makeover!

    Project Folder is really just slapped on, that's no good!

    - Max need to understand the folder structure, saving a rendered images Max always suggests the 'scene' folder, when 'renderoutput' would be the logical default here. In fact most dialogues defaults to the 'scene' folder, even when browsing textures for the first time.
    - Custom design of the folder structure (who needs the vpost-folder these days?)
    - Relative search path should be default and need to work with Render Elements output.

  9. Import preferences and settings from previous 3ds Max installs

    I always do some keyboard, GUI and preferences customization when I install 3ds Max, and they're usually the same ones each time I upgrade. It would be very nice if 3ds Max could see and optionally import preferences and GUI-settings from existing installations.

  10. Make ALL windows dockable

    I lose hours every day because I have to keep moving my Material editor/ Render setup/Rendered Frame Window/ Scene explorer.
    And PLEASE make it usable for multiple monitor setup

  12. Enhanced User Interface in Max

    as the title says, we need an updated user interface, a fresh new look similar to maya & mudbox UI. (QT Based UI) without loosing the current layout

    The enhanced user interface can make it more appealing to the eyes, Modern, cross platform, and adds more customizable workflow.

  13. dark ui color is inconsistent

    The dark ui scheme uses black text in areas were it should be white (command panel & named selection list for example). An effort should be made to correct this scheme and hook up all areas of max to be consistent with this scheme. It seems like a small thing to correct, but would make using this scheme much more preferable.

  14. We need a need a new color picker

    This feature is in serious need of an overhaul. The addition of a sample eye dropper tool was a good step in the right direction, but we need smoothing much more robust. I realize that there are some 3rd party plugins out there that do this, but it would be good to possibly license one of these or create a new color picker from scratch with user input of course.

  15. Ability to tear off menus and rollouts

    I would like to see Max has ability to tear off menus, and not only that. It will be good to see that we can tear off specific rollout from e.g. editable poly or editable spline object. When not in use of these, they can just be grayed out. I know that would help me a lot in my workflow.

  17. Grouping in Slate material editor

    The ability to sort materials into groups, as in Composite; so for example you could create a coloured region in the Slate material editor and drop material and maps in to sort material in a logical order rather than having them scattered horizontally or vertically. This function should not be restricted to entire material trees, rather you should be able to created nested groups for just maps and be able to annotate them and give them different colours too.

  18. improve the keyboard shortcut assigning and managing

    It is very weird the way max handle/manage keyboard shortcuts, its a bit confusing. where you could have same shortcut key but in different window or different modifier. and its very hard to find which keys has been assigned to which action.

  19. Ability to change properties of multiple objects or modifiers properties as the same time.

    For exemple if we select some lights, for the same parameter if values are differents field could be empty but can be modify. The same if we select some objects with some modifiers, we could modify them directly in the Modifier stack, without use some script like Zorb Tool http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/modifier-modifier-zorb

  20. Everything Instanced 'but' one....

    So many times I want to have a modifier or object instanced across a scene but want to have variation in one or two values whilst mainting an instanced link across the rest of the parameters. Currently I end up having to write scripts which do it. This should go for materials and anything instanceable.
