General Feature Requests
PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.
Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.
What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
- When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
- Users can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.
SDK/Scripting Enhancements
This forum is about improvements to the SDK or Script-related.

ICE for 3ds Max Modifiers
Developing modifiers similar to ICE would bring a huge boost to external development, similar to what Maxscript did. It would allow more flexible modifiers since we could add what we want to them, and hopefully make it easier for the dev team to develop new modifiers in the future.
3ds Max lacks the ability to easily author modifiers or customize them for particular production needs. The architecture is open enough for experienced C++ developers to create customized modifiers, but this often requires extensive knowledge of the 3ds Max SDK and is not something the average technical artist could achieve.

514 votesI’ve reactivated this idea and worked with Martin to adjust the description. the idea did not change from Martin’s original intent so votes can remain. we have just more clearly described what this is not about. please review your votes and make sure they still apply. I think some of you voted for a different feature that should be entered separately than this.

muscle jigling, skin sliding, wrinkling and volume preserving tools
the tool like older plugin skinfx but with better colision tools

Make trajectories adjustable in the viewport
Currently, trajectories in 3ds Max are strictly for reference and do not allow the user to adjust the motion of an object. It would be nice if the trajectory could become a spline which you then could adjust in the viewport. This is funtionality similar to what is done in After Efffects or Combustion after a element is animated. Another example can be seen in Maya. There is a tech demo on the Area showing similar functionality.

More robust fluid system
Make a more robust fluid system where we can simulate photorealistic water, fire, and even smoke without the use of external plugins. Make sure it can be simulated fast and has general overall ease of use and speed unlike RealFlow 4 and even Fume FX.

Better Skin modifier and overall Skinning/Deforming experience
Autodesk can look at guess what - Autodesk Maya for beginning:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJfUie-bBko
Also BonesPro looks pretty cool:
http://www.bonespro.com/ (doesn't mean you should buy them as always, though)- better performance, multi-threading
- modern/good/advanced skinning options
- better listener/filtering
- unified selections/tools between Skin and other modifiers (and stack)
- any innovation? (mix of displacement/skin morph/muscles and more)
- additional deformers?For example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9w5jIxNYlI&feature=player_embedded#! (Maya's fStretch)http://mayadqskinning.sourceforge.net/ (dual quaternion)

Thanks.

better performance skin
Make the skin modifier better performance.
109 votesour skin modifier is Multi-thread now (Skin has always used the DeformerProc which is by multithreaded by default. So all the point deformation calculation are multithreaded), so I changed this idea’s title and description. If you think the new title/description is not reflecting your idea, you may take those votes back/start a new idea.

Dynamics Simulations!
I would kill for something like Maya Dynamics inside of 3DS max. Any sort of half-decent particle simulations - water, smoke, fire, etc.
Even though it isn't a particle system, the awesome fractal pattern that Maya uses for oceans would be a huge plus in 3DS Max - the ocean (lume) shader only goes so far......

Bones Pro (or similar improvements) integration
Bones Pro works with CAT and adds terrific volume preserving features and solving/feedback speed several orders of magnitude faster. It would turn Max into the solution to beat in terms of Rigging

Add Pen Attribute Holder
Paul Neale's script will be such a great little addition. Even if its just added as part of the bonus disk.

Working with controllers is convoluted
Controllers can be assigned in the motionpanel and in the trackbar or a trackview. But not all are equal in editting the controller settings. In trackview you cannot set the rotation order for example, that needs to be done in motionpanel. You can assign a lookat to the gizmo of a xform, but after that it´s only editable via maxscript! Motionpanel only exposes controllers of transform(PRS) type. But lets you edit it, while trackview exposes all controllers, but doesn't let you edit it's settings (most of it).

Volume preservation in skin
Similar to Maya's dual quat. weighting or Eigen vectors.

Allow CAT to use BIP files in Motion Mixer
Allowing CAT to use BIP files in Motion Mixer would be great. The current file type limitation in the motion mixer for CAT is a real limiting factor it its uptake for my current production.

Easier Skinning System
Make assigning verticies/polygons/edges to bones easier and simpler.

Multi-Threaded Cloth Simulations
The Cloth modifier is not multi-threaded. I recently had to simulate 16 flags blowing in the wind and when only 2 of your 8 cores are being used it can be really frustrating (it literally took over 8 hours).
There are probably other modifiers with this problem (Hair and Fur?) that could use an update.

37 votesIt is MT, but cloth is not something that is highly MT in nature. You’re not going to see huge wins here.

alembic
Would be really good to have alembic point cache format support in max like it is in maya.

rotation spring controller
A rotation spring right now has to be built via dummies and offset transform springs, which is tedious and inefficient. Availability of a true rotation spring controller would be neat.

Time warp - slow motion
A tool/ Curve track that allows global or per track slow motion/time warp.
Rayfire's way is simple and effective - an helper with an animatable value. < 1 = slow down, >1 speed up. Put in a list the objects affected.
Should work with EVERYTHING - particles, noise phase etc.27 votes -
Markers on the timeline.
Could be useful if we can put markers (like After Effects, for example) on the timeline.
One kind of marks for marking steps of the animation, or whatever.
And another kind for marks for indicate cropping area for render or playing.
There a place in Max, since version1, a free area zone at the right end of the timeline where you can place buttons, to choose to snap on them or not, or indicate to play only the playing-render time-zone.23 votes
