General Feature Requests
PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.
Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.
What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
- When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
- Users can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

Render to Texture across multiple objects into SINGLE output textures
I would like to be able to use Render To Texture (RTT) across several objects at once and have a checkbox that will force the RTT output textures to be composited/combined into a single texture (and for the output texture filename field to work when you have multiple objects selected and this option checked).
For example, you may have five objects that are all using different coordinates in the same Unwrap UVW modifier (Unwrap instanced across the five objects... or even the objects have modifier already collapsed) but you only want to render one diffuse, one normal, etc that is…

Animatable clouds to work in Daylight System
Similar to Dreamscape or Terragen or Vue. Create dramatic animatable clouds that are compatable with iray / mentalray -inside 3ds Max. Cloud system to be part of the new intergrated physx simulation system. Terragen doesn't work in Max. Dreamscape doesn't work with iray / mentalray. Vue xStream doesn't work with iray and has it's own wind system.

add to photometrics an option geometry as a light source
For photometrics I really need an option of choosing geometric objects as a light source :)
Self illumination in material is not good in mr.
For example this feature implemented in vray.

stereoscopic 3d
Actually i am working on stereoscopic 3d content development and have never found total satisfaction with tools currently available in Vray or Final render or Luis script for 3ds max stereoscopic camera modifier.
I personally want Autodesk to think in this section because it the most growing section at present and people are dieing to get something good.
The Autodesk Maya like tool or better then that one native inside 3Ds max will boost my production and may be boost Autodesk 3Ds max user community too.

Background Render
A simple button next to the render settings in the render window itself that would send the render to the background and allow you to continue work on your scene, but not necessarily update itself - it would just take the scene as it is when you hit "render" and allow you to view that as you worked.

Improvements for the commandline renderer (e.g. scene sets)
The batch renderer 3dsmaxcmd.exe was not well updated since it was build in 2005. It still lacks features that other applications have. And it does not even support the new state sets. .
What the commandline renderer should have:
1. Options to select which state set to render. What is the use of state sets if you end up saving multiple scene files again?
2. Disable all question dialogs in batch render mode. (Some plugins ask the user for e.g. a temp path which does not exist on the render farm. And the dialog stays open until someone pressed the…34 votes -
Export screen grid lighting data to csv
Please allow Screen Grid illuminance/luminance data to be exported to .csv files similar to Light Meter data to save having to type the data off the rendered image.

Sometimes we need to crop just some animated parts and would be geat if we could animate the crop in the viewport as we want it.

iray Matte workflow
Have iray work with matte materials, shadow, reflections, etc, just like mental ray. If possible have iray work with some render elements, like Z-buffer, Matte, etc.

Ability to region render in max viewport like XSI.

Default Lighting - Render (Scene Lights Present)
A simple way to render with default lighting when there are lights already set up in the scene. It allows for quick test renders when scene lights aren't wanted.
Possible implementation: A radial box in the Render Window to switch between Scene Lights and Default Lights. This could also switch when changing the viewport setting: 'Illuminate With Scene Lights/Default Lights'.

Enable point rendering for particles in Quicksilver to get similar results as Krakatoa
Enable the ability to render just points (vertices) in Quicksilver to get similar results to Krakatoa when rendering particles.
The performance of Quicksilver is great, but if we are able to render just vertices then we can have 15 millions particles in a rendertime of about 1 minute per frame (more than Krakatoa, but is great if you don't have it).18 votes -

Currently you can not do this, but it is incredibly useful, and opens up lots of new possibilities when creating imagery.

render layers
One of my only better favorited features in maya over max is the Render Layers feature in maya. Bringing that to max would be simply great! Managing heavy scenes for render would benfit in a big way.

RTT & Mental Ray using GPU + CPU
GPUs are used in many apps now because of their speed. I think if Max was able to benefit from using the GPU as well, during the RTT process, or Mentral Ray, this would free up computers to do other tasks, as well as process the renders much faster.

Night sky system
Would it be possible (or even worthwhile) to configure the daylight system to switch to a "night sky system" when the sun is lower than the horizon?
