General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. Quad chamfers

    A chamfering tool that does quad only chamfers would rock!

  3. Update the Unwrap Editor to use a modern display system

    The unwrap editor is painfully slow. If you have more than a few thousand triangles displayed it is almost impossible to do any editing with slow redraws and updates. I think before any more updates are made to features you need to update the performance. What is the use of having features if it takes 1 minute plus to drag a face selection>

  4. Precision creation of line with measurements and angles

    When creating a line, you cannot see it's length or angles. It would make life a lot easier when this would work more like Modo, which is showing the length of each segment to the side of that segment, and when starting a new segment, it will show the corner with the previous segment.

  5. UV editing should be a mode, not a modifier

    Having the ability to keep the Unwrap Editor open at all times would greatly speed up the UV editing work flow. And since UV editing is such a big part of creating 3D assets, that would be a big savings for many users.

  6. viewport canvas - bodypaint replacement

    enhancing viewport canvas to be something like maxon bodypaint, (with faster responce when using bigger textures, with projection things from part of image to a object, etc..)

  7. Smoothing UV's

    applying a turbosmooth or meshsmooth to a low resolution object then in turn smooths the UV's. This creates all kinds of texture distortion and bleeding. Is it possible to integrate a better form of smoothing or texture swimming such as we see in XSI.

  8. Symmetrical modeling as in ZBrush

    The graphite modeling tool "Symmetry tools" is great idea. However it doesnt work properly. Its not as accurate as must be. Make it into a modifier or put it in the edit poly modifier and make it more intuitive.

    This would be a great addition to the workflow for morph targets on heads for example.

    Look at ZBrush´s symmetrical modeling.

  9. Enhancement of 3Ds Max poly extrude

    wish there's an option in max to make extrude works the way expected as shown in this link...

    right now that requires alot of manipulating and fine-tuning specially for architectural work... so please give us the option to extrude thing in that manner

  10. Isoline NURMS modeling.

    The current cage system isn't always the best system when modeling. A modeling system where you can work with the smoothed Isioline NURMS vertexes in the editable poly would greatly enhance productivity.

  11. new Push modifier with collision detection

    Push modifier is great for many things in vfx - in conjunction with other modifiers it can be extremely powerful and useful. Its major fault tho' is that it doesn't stop pushing when two faces collide - instead, you got crossing polygons. If it stopped pushing polys when they collide it would become terrific.

  13. Chamfer as Modifier

    Whatever enhancements the chamfer tool may or may not find in coming versions, it would be nice to have the option to add a stack-selection modifier to the stack. This would be a nice, non-destructive way to edit edge roundness that can be changed easily after the fact.

  15. Maya Paint effects for 3ds Max

    What I really miss in max is something like paint effects seen in maya. Very handy for creating vegetations instantly instead of going through scatters and all. I always switch to maya and export the paint effects from there. It will be very helpful something like that with good library and default mental ray materials

  16. Freeze seam vertices in Symmetry

    Please make it possible to freeze the seam vertices in one axis perpendicular to the mirror (so you could move them in Y and Z, but not X).

    This should be an option in the symmetry modifiers 'Parameters' rollout ("freeze seam in X,Y,Z").

  17. Shift + Drag a vertex to extend splines!

    As the title says. Shift + Drag a spline vertex should extend it, like shift + drag an edge in edit/editable poly extrudes. I miss this a lot, and would make working with splines much better and faster.

  18. Adding a hairstyle modeling tool similar to the one available in HairFarm.

    EPHERE had also started such a scripted plugin on their own some time ago. This will be very valuable addition to the existing toolset for working with hair&fur.
    Multi threading is a must when it comes to lots of furry objects. Improved material and rendering, especially with mental ray will be very welcome.

  19. Straight bevel and Chamfer

    Have a box, select half polygons and do a bevel local normals. Box has straight lines so the new polygons has to be straight!!!

  20. Ignore Backfacing

    An option for Ignore Backfacing, ignoring what is behind the selection rather than only ignoring if it's facing in the opposite direction.
