General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

  1. Reopen floating windows from previous session

    Add an option to allow all floating windows like the Material Editor, Render Setup, etc that were open when you close Max to reopen on the next startup. This would be like AutoCAD's tool palettes retaining their visibility between sessions.

  3. Xref units mismatch acceptance

    Our 3d model library consists of files from many sources, and the scenes are often set to various System Units. When we xref these models into a project scene that has different units, we are asked if we want to Rescale the XRef Objects to the System Unit. When many models are being referenced, we have to hit the OK button for every one.

    I suggest one of two things should be implemented.

    1. At the initial loading of the XRef, whatever you select is then 'remembered' by 3ds Max, so there is no longer a prompt when loading the…

    A "VOID modifier" which acts like a Boolean (subtract) operation on an object, like Revit does to "shaft objects" in buildings/ architecture

  7. New Complete Character Animation system

    Take the best from Biped & CAT to create a New Character Animation system to meet todays requirements (think how cool biped Was when it first came out). i.e. Full Human IK system - including artist friendly tools for animation of face / hands / hair / props / clothing - to mix in with 3dsMax animation curve/ragdoll/etc... oh and while your at it (yes I'm being cheeky) - include a Wide range of presets/animals - with procedural driven animation controls as well as keyframing and mocap - this MAY sound a lot.... but surely by now this what Max…

  11. Make PFlow-Animations bakeable

    The ability to bake a PFlow-Animation would provide some important advantages:

    - better performance once the animation is baked
    - you can edit the animation via keyframe positioning for SlowMo-Effects afterwards
    - you can work on and combine multiple PFlow-animations without breaking the performance to zero

    This is a feature that could solve some problems for animations in combination with RayFire and several time-adjustments.

  12. W3X File viewer/importer/exporter - Plugin update or new feature to 3DSMax

    Filetype: W3X files

    To load and save W3X files, the plugin exists for 3DSMax 7/8/9 but these versions are out-of-date and the plugins need updating.

    How to solve:
    1) have a legacy feature that can access and use old plugins from versions 7 and above.
    2) an automatic plugin updater and debugger, to update old plugins
    3) a feature that allows W3X files to be opened without the need for a plugin
    4) someone to take the time to make the new plugin
    5) for Autodesk to allow people to download the old version of 3DSMax for free.

  13. Max 2017 Unwrap UVW - Remove cumbersome new move gizmo from freeform mode

    This new gizmo is redundant and awkward. The freeform tool has always had axis constraints which activate with the shift key. This functionality was elegant and familiar; Photoshop works the same way.

    The new gizmo often activates when you don't want it to, and unnecessarily restricts your ability to move your selection.
    For example: if you click on a polygon or element in the area towards the right or above the center where the gizmo arrows appear, the vertical or horizontal constraint will activate unintentionally. This happens even though the gizmo appears after the click--as if it's activating the constraint…

  14. booleans

    It would be so helpful to have fillet control for edges where booleans meet(ala mesh fusion) With boolean workflows being a current hardsurface trend this ability is sorely missed. Using hard edges as a selection tool almost accomplishes this, but almost isn't good enough. I'd also like to say that if this gets implemented it would be nice to see full implementation where stray verts don't cause irregular results(as would be the case when using any chamfer option now) I would again refer to mesh-fusion.

    ShaderFX is very powerful for making shaders for games but currently there is no output for, one of the most popular game engines, Unity3D.

  16. UVW Unwrap: Select Edges By Face Angle

    The new peel feature is really helpful in UVWUnwrap, but when uving hard surface objects, you generally want to apply a seam at areas of high curvature, like the 90 degree edges on a box. This is identical to how you generally want to apply creases on a mesh for opensubdiv at those edges.

    I'd like these same SelectByFaceAngle controls from the Creaset modifier in the UVWUnwrap editor. That way, I could select the edges of high curvature, turn them into seams, and then use peel to very quickly uv my hard surface mesh.

  17. A list of new ideas

    Set ocular size to viewport camera
    Set the viewport to have camera properties so the user can model in different ocular settings, for example if the user sets the ocular setting to have a lens of 43.456 and FOV of 45.0 they can see the scene as a human person would if they were traveling around the scene in real life.

    There is a workaround for this bug when it shows up, but it involves destroying your custom toolbars.

  19. ART render native map support.

    the new ART renderer in max is very good but lack of some basic features makes it unusable in a lot of scenarios.

    please add support for the native maps specifically "falloff".
    the node is extremely important in creating more complex material networks.

  20. Enhanced menu colour customizing

    the new 2017 UI is very welcome but it still is quite inconsistent.

    the enhanced menu cannot be customized. there is no way to change the colour of the main bar or the dropdown.

    this makes no sense. please give us the option to customize the whole interface, not just parts of it.
