General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

  1. Under object properties - Separate "visible to reflection/refraction" into two separate fields, individual check boxes.

    When accessing object properties, instead of having reflection and refraction linked together, separate them into two individual fields. This will be an enormous time saver when working with images or footage that will have 3D integrated on top, and allow the user to see a more final result sooner, before the 3D is brought into a compositing program.

  3. Affine UV transformations

    It would be great if it was possible to get some affine UV transformations with the UV editor. The transformation tool in the UV editor looks a lot like photoshop's transformation tool except that it is only possible to rotate and scale meshes along the X and Y axis. It would be great if we could have things like Skew,shear, corner pinning, bending, and other such effects or the possibility of moving/rotating the pivot around so I could rotate a UV island 45 degrees and then move the element up and down in local space on this rotated axis.

  4. improve quality of populate meshes

    When I use populate people in my projects I often get told they look like balloons. They just don't look very appealing nor natural, even the high res versions.

  5. Oculus Rift support

    Native Oculus Rift support for the Nitrous viewport in 3DS Max to preview models in virtual reality. It would be a great feature for client presentations of work in progress and in general a great time saver in VR production.

  6. weight hammer

    A tool that applies the average of surrounding weight values to selected vertices. It is called weight hammer in Maya and it is great time saver for fixing skin weights.

  7. Quicksilver compatible with Hair and Fur

    Quicksilver should work correctly with Hair and Fur.
    This will be the fastest way of rendering fur, hair and grass.

  8. TurboReverse or Mesh Smooth Reverse

    If you can please add TurboReverse or Mesh smooth reverse in modifier stack or in Turbosmooth/Meshsmooth modifier.
    Sometimes we download a model in which the turbo smooth is already baked in and we cannot change it anymore. selecting each edges and loops and then delete every loop manually takes a huge amount of time, so it would be nice if you guys can add this feature in next 3ds max update.

    BlobMesh should work faster.
    Cleaner and more stable surface.
    Relax function of the surface.
    Trimming the surface by other objects and covering holes.

  10. Spring controller enhancement

    Ability to edit multiple spring controllers at the same time.
    Ability to wire parameters of the spring controller.

  11. Accidental renaming of objects in layers is not undoable

    Using the scene explorer in layer mode and having 'select children' active means when renaming a layer Max will rename all objects within that layer.

    When the layer is collapsed it isn't immediately obvious to the user that the rename has occurred. This action is not undo-able and therefore an all too easy way to destroy a scene or rig.

  12. model signature

    I was talking to a friend on fb and he said that he uploaded a model to turbosquid that got stolen retextured and sold. So I was thinking of model signatures that are encrypted in the mesh. Personally I don't care if someone buys one of my meshes retextures it and sells it I would just like to get paid for the mesh, maybe this will help sites like 3dstudio and turbosquid track royalties and possibly stop piracy?

  17. Improved subdivision isoline editing mode

    Fast subdivision isoline editing similar to Maya, Modo, Blender, etc.

    Meaning: editing straight onto the iso-lines of the subdivided model instead of trying to find the right vertex or edge of the cage.
    Currently works only with polygons and is very slow.

  19. 3d Viewports, Framebuffer and Cameras.

    Nvidea - 3d Vision, AMD - HD3D and Oculus Rift compatible
    Viewport´s, Framebuffer and 3d Cameras.
    Would de a gerat help for modeling and creating Stereo Renderings.

    Also it would pave the way for the future devices linke holo glasses and so on.

  20. Add option to include XRef files in send network rendering job

    Add a checkbox unter "include maps" like "include Xref" to send also all needed xref scene/files to render.
