General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

  1. Add Particle Strands like XSI ICE Strands

    In order to get trails, growing splines, tracing particles I use Pflow with a Spawn.
    This method might work for basic setups, but you can hit the wall as soon as you need something more complex/robust. For instance, the subframe interpolation makes the accuracy of the spawned particles somehow funky, i.e. traced particles generated by the spawn look like a jagged line (look at this post: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=6&t=1279391).

    It would be an enormous addition having particle strands as in Softimage ICE, possibilities could be infinite.
    It could be possible to create strands to generate plexus-like animation, or strands that grows…

  3. Keep working during AutoSave / Save function

    3ds max saving file times are long. During save and autosave we are loosing so much time. Can't we keep working on max. and file saving can be a background operation ?

  4. Conform NURBS to Mesh

    Allow NURBS to surfdeform according to a mesh but STAY as NURBS for further CV editing and manipulation. Imagine I import a helmet mesh from another software and I want wrap around it a NURBS surface, but have it stay as NURBS for further refinement

  5. Metaballs Armature (Zpheres)

    I would like a feature akin to zspheres in zbrush, where you can quickly sketch a character with its limbs and major forms by doing something akin to puishing and pulling rigged metalballs around.

    You'd start with a sphere, and then be able to add limbs. The limbs come with a simple rig allowing you to bend them like limbs would normally be bent. You could then add further sub-limbs on these. At a certain point you could convert your armature into a single polygonal surface, which you could then continue to sculpt using normal mesh editing tools. But the…

  6. Mudbox Sculpting Inside 3dsmax

    Would love to see Max's sculpting tools to be on par with those of mudbox. Max currently has a "Paint Deform" feature in the Ribbon, but it has only a limited number of brush types.     Zbrush has this great feature for roughing in geometry where you paint shapes on 3 different planes and it creates a 3d object in the middle from the intersection of the 3 shapes. You can read more on the feature here:

    Of course the resulting shape is a highres mesh that may not be appropriate for your pipeline, but it gives you a nice base object incredibly quickly that you can then retopologize by hand to create your final mesh. The cool part is the design aspect is super quick, so you can experiment with different shapes quickly before…

  8. Auto Retopology

    While 3dsmax has many tools for retopologizing a mesh, it really need an auto-retopology tool. A good example would be the tools in 3dCoat or mudbox. A full featured retopology tool would include the following features:

    * Quad tessellation for the final generated mesh
    * The ability to retopologize a selection of meshes into a single mesh
    * A target for the number of faces you want in the final mesh
    * painting area of the mesh receive more detail in the retopologized mesh
    * Ability to define curves on your surface that suggest the flow of your edge loops …

    The ability to convert old maxscripts to MCGs would breathe life into so many old maxscripts for us non code monkeys.

  11. Improved Garment Maker for character clothing.

    3ds max's garment maker is not good enough for creating garments for characters. Sometimes it creates very less or no wrinkles (mostly with tight fitted garments) which makes garments look as if they are made up of some thick material. GMaker needs to be improved.

    It would be great if 3ds max developers could update this system and make it create quality cloth similar or closer to Marvelous Designer. Thanks

  12. Debug and Analyse system to MCG

    Add a debug and analyse system to MCG like the one in cebas TP or similar, and highlight where the validation failed because when your setup is complex it's very hard sometimes to look for your faulty node.

    When I import DWG file,I can choose "Skip all Frozen Layers" option in Manage Layers dialog

  16. Ability to make Max transparent, for reference images.

    Some other programs have transparency sliders for the UI, so that you can put a reference image behind the application.

    I won't bore you with the description of the tedious work of getting a simple throwaway bitmap from my cloud storage into max just to drag a simple curve, but you get the idea. Transparent Max option. Thanks, upvotes to the left.

  17. Move detached Command Panel

    When I detach Command Panel to other monitor, when I connect throught remote desktop I can't move the Command Panel to primary monitor with win key + arrow.

  19. RAM caching for custom image file sequences used for Viewport Backgrounds

    When trying to roto animate to footage, stepping one frame at a time often doesn't cut it when checking work. This was addressed a long time ago by Bobo in the days of SD. Without this, animating elements for VFX and I'm sure other applications is painful, especially at resolutions higher than HD 1080

  20. Screen relative Ghosting option

    while the existing viewport ghosting tool is somewhat useful at times when examining object animations relative to world space, it would be great to have screen/camera relative ghosting so you could see how an object may be swimming around in frame. This would be useful for applications where you are animating a camera to follow/cover action of vehicles in motion
