General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. Work with Chaos group to add a PAUSE button to the V-ray engine. PLEASEEEEEEEE

    When rendering with V-ray there is no way to pause frame buffer. Just Cancel. Make it so, Number One!

  2. Choose image filetype in Render To Texture dialog not the usual image file type dialog box

    When having multiple objects selected and wanting to Render To Texture with them, it's very frutrating to not be able to choose the image output filetype since the "..." button is grayed out from the 'File Name and Type' under the Output rollout. My current workaround is to select each object one by one and type in or choose the bitmap type. Would be nice to be able to choose the image type from a rollout or to just be able to push the button in order to change it when multiple objects are selected.

  3. Animatable region render window

    Would be nice to be able to animate the region window when rendeirng. Some 3rd party renderers don't support region types like "Selected" so the region window can't track with objects. Time is wasted rendering when making the region window large enough to cover an objects movement through the whole animation. Being able to animate the placement and size of the region window would solve this problem.

  4. View Normals on an editable poly

    Currenty we have to add an Edit Mesh modifier in ordrer to see normals. There needs to be a toggle on the ribbon or elsewhere to show normals on selected.

  5. Bifrost Max bridge

    A bridge from Max to Bifrost. Doesn't need to be huge - if we can build scene graphs with the slate editor and read back PRT files, this would be a really great start.

  7. Add decal objects

    In Create panel, it would be a good idea to add a decal object, similar to the unreal engine :

  9. 3DS Max LT

    Develop a version of 3DS Max similar to Maya LT.

    Design the software to feature game development methodologies and remove unnecessary CAD / Inventor type elements.

    In many ways the program could function like an updated version of GMAX to work with modern development pipelines.

    Max's animation systems such as CAT & Biped
    FBX and OBJ mesh formats
    Direct X Material Editor Slate / Compact

  10. BUG - Drag-Drop files into Scene Xref Dialog also merges some of those max files

    If I select one or more max files in windows explorer and I drag-drop them into the Scene Xref dialog, they all appear as scene xrefs as expected, but one or more of those max files ALSO gets merged into the scene, resulting in duplicate geometry. This merging behavior is unwanted and is IMHO a bug. This bug has been present in several versions of Max and I keep complaining about it.

  11. Add the Keyboard shortcut cycles from the transform tools [scale & select] to Unwrap Transform tools

    Repeatedly pressing the R key cycles through the different Scale Transforms and Q the different Selection region shapes. Could this function be added to the transform tools in UVW Unwrap, W = Move in x & y > move in X > move in y. R = Scale in x & y . Scale in x .Scale in y

  12. Helpers/Dummies on the timeslider / Track Bar

    Allow the Creation of Helper objects or Flags on the timeline that allows the coordination of keyframes.

    When animating, coordinating key events on the timeline would be aided by the addition of a helper or marker flag on the timeline to which keyframes can be aligned to, to co-ordinate different objects. if a keyframe is added it is marked on the timeline if the object is selected, however when the object is no longer selected its keyframe is no longer visible on the timeline, a permanently visible helper on the time line would allow keys to aligned between different objects/cameras…

  15. Rebuilt 3dsmax interface to scale it properly to UHD monitors (4k HiDpi)

    yeah ... in 2015, while there are already many UHD 4K monitors available (3840x2160) , High ends Laptops with UHD and even 5K monitors, we are stuck to old generation monitors because 3dsmax interface did not evolve since many years.

    The result is that you have the choice between :

    * using native resolution then you need a magnifying glass to read the menus and icons
    * scaling something like 150% with windows then all the interface become awfully unusable
    * downsize your graphic card resolution then you have a blurry amazing 1080 resolution on your brand new high end…

  17. A temporary camera for animation process.

    Often we have to constantly change the viewing angle to follow the animated object in the process of animation.
    I propose to introduce a temporary camera that will be attached to this object. It should be created and removed in one click.

  18. miauu step edge ring / loop

    Implement this script - It already exists for edges and polys in Maya

    All you need to do is select two edges that are ring loopable and it will automaticly select all the in-between edges.

    right now the only way to enable is with plugins but they are not stable.
