General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

  1. A list of new ideas

    Set ocular size to viewport camera
    Set the viewport to have camera properties so the user can model in different ocular settings, for example if the user sets the ocular setting to have a lens of 43.456 and FOV of 45.0 they can see the scene as a human person would if they were traveling around the scene in real life.

  2. Fix for "invalid flyout button ID error" bug

    There is a workaround for this bug when it shows up, but it involves destroying your custom toolbars.

  3. ART render native map support.

    the new ART renderer in max is very good but lack of some basic features makes it unusable in a lot of scenarios.

    please add support for the native maps specifically "falloff".
    the node is extremely important in creating more complex material networks.

  4. Enhanced menu colour customizing

    the new 2017 UI is very welcome but it still is quite inconsistent.

    the enhanced menu cannot be customized. there is no way to change the colour of the main bar or the dropdown.

    this makes no sense. please give us the option to customize the whole interface, not just parts of it.

  5. Simplify the physical Camera options.

    Simplify the physical Camera options. So you have a 'default' option which only has the Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO than. Then 'advanced' option with all the rest of the settings,

  6. REWORK CHAMFER

    It would be really really useful to have a chamfer without triangles (it happens when you create a chamfer on two or more edges meeting in a single vertex. Also you add a nice function "force parallel" it keeps edges parallel when you do a bevel (It's in maya 2016 extension 2) Please add the same features!!!   7. Script/Pipeline : Kill all "Ops" in Api

    With "ops" (skinOps, meshOps etc...) All operations in script is very long, because you should to be in modifier panel, with good modifiers selected, with good subobjectLevel...

    Load .env file without the skinOps mode, and add argument to the skinOps.loadEnvelope function for a silent loading (like open/save/merge file)

  13. Reduce the pricing for rental only licenses / subscription

    Autodesk seems to think rental licensing is the holy grail - same as Adobe.
    But Adobe gives me full acces to their complete toolset for 50 Euros/ Month.
    For that price, even as a freelancer/small buisness/starter, i don´t think twice - i just take it (also there´s no real competition for Adobe and their tools).
    Autodesk will let me pay 238€/Month for only piece of software. That may be ok, if you´re a bigger company or you have already fully developed your buisness, but as a little one man show it´s a lot of money - too much i think. …

  14. Viewport 2.0

    Maya viewport 2.0 for 3ds max. or at least make 3ds max viewports as good as Maya's.

    Basically I want XGen and viewport 2.0 and Renderman for max.

  16. 3ds Max 2017 UI overhaul improvements

    Overall, I'm liking the new UI changes made to Max 2017. There are always areas of improvement though.

    Here's my comments so far:
    - The sub-object icons (vertex, polygon, element, etc.) are not pixel perfect. The appear blurry on my monitor, which is a real eyesore.
    - UI-control buttons should not have rounded edges, to match basically every other UI-control.
    - Hovering over UI-control spinners should make the up/down buttons darker. Clicking/holding them should make them blue.
    - UI-control sliders should have dotted outlines instead of solid ones, to match buttons, checkboxes and radiobuttons (since they accept clicks)

  17. Shift-selecting loops only works in one direction

    Try this:
    Create a sphere and convert it to an editable poly. Select a poly, and shift-click the poly on the right or left side. This will create a loop going around the sphere. Select a polygon under or over the selected loop, and shift-select another loop. This works perfectly, no issues so far.
    Next, try the same thing, but instead of selecting horizontal loops, you select vertical ones. You will find that, as you try to select the second vertical loop, it will create a horizontal one instead.

    To fix this, I suggest that shift-selecting loops should always use…

  18. Point-to-point selections next to already selected polygons

    3ds Max 2017 has added Point-to-point selections for edit/editable poly, which is great. The problem, however, is when trying to do a point-to-point selection on a polygon that sits right next to a polygon that is already selected. The problem is that it selects a poly loop/ring instead.

    Try this:
    Create a plane with 10x10 segments and convert it to an editable poly. Shift-select any polygon, and drag out a point-to-point selection. Click and release shift to stop the selection. Next, try to do another point-to-point selection right next to the previous one. You will find that it wants to…
