General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

  1. Add "Open on Render" to Render Message window

    I like to have the Render Message window always open while rendering. So it would be helpfull to have a checkbox like "Open on Render" somewhere. Maybe beside the "Open on Error" checkox?

  2. Multi Material/Map

    Think this as a enhanced version of multi-sub material with more options. Such as...

    1) Custom spinner
    allow users apply a sub-material on the whole object.
    Then, users can use Multi material as "Switch" material.

    2) Random checkbox / Seed spinner
    Now add random checkbox next to "Custom" spinner.
    Multi material become "Random" material.
    Multi material will pick one of sub material and apply to the object.

    3) ObjectID
    This will be handy too.

    4) User Property
    Lets say I set an user property called "brick" and assign number 1-7.
    Then I make a Multi material with 7 sub material. …

  3. Add auto Alignment/Snapping functionality to the 'Select and Place' tool

    This would be similar to Adobe Illustrator in which while you are transforming a shape in the canvas it's center point(pivot in our case) and bounding box automatically detect and briefly snap to those of the other shapes, a temporary line shows the two points that are aligned together at the time.

    Select and Place is a very useful and very fast layout tool, but it works in a freehand fashion, with this functionality we would have a very fast layout tool which can also be very precise at the same time.

  4. Dimensions

    Add a native Dimension tool to 3ds Max. This could be an update to the Tape Measure helper, or a new tool. Would like at least as much functionality as in Bobo's DIMaster Script.

  5. Update all Icons

    Update all Icons, it's hard readable, not beauty, not practical, same bad design. For example in 2009 more better, in 2010-15 very very bad for 3ds Max level software. I hope AD fix this problem in 2016 version.

  6. material nested grouping in Material Explorer

    Material nested grouping in Material Explorer.
    Materials are scene elements, and they also need to be organized, like objects in viewport.
    Now it's possible for objects in viewport, but how about materials.
    It you have lots of materials in scene, how you can organize them without nested grouping.

  8. Nitrous Display Resolution for Bitmaps needs GROUPS

    We work with 10k+ pixel-textures, basicly DWG-plans as a .jpg since 3DStudioMax still cannot handle a big amount of DWG-splines. (Our plans are really... really... big. - URBAN STUDY COMPANY)

    So we want the ability to have certain bitmaps to display as a higher resolution then the average 1500pixel textures who don't need to be that high!

    Every time we either have a way to heavy viewport because ALL textures are displayed as 10k+ textures. Or we have to low settings which makes our plans unreadable.

    PLEASE CREATE THIS GROUPING-ABILITY FOR TEXTURE RESOLUTIONS

    Now we only have background/procedural/texture-bitmap option.

  9. Slice Circle tool

    A slice circle tool be a welcome asset along the Slice Plane tool. When am manually merging two meshes I usually use Slice Plane and it gives awesome results and the toplogy looks good. But when I have 2 circular objects that need to intersect each other or subtract one from the other, I usually need to duplicate the sphere and cut by snapping on to vertices of the duplicate sphere to create the circular cut that fits the other mesh perfectly.   11. Consolidate Selection Functions into all Geometry Objects and Modifiers.

    One of the most frustrating aspect of modeling and UV work is that selection functions that work so well in Editable Poly are not there for many other objects and modifiers.

    Similar specific cases have been mentions to consolidate Epoly/Emesh but it needs to extended.

    Just **some examples** where all the epoly selection tools would be great:

    Vertex Paint Modifier
    Unwrap UVW > UV Editor*
    Edit Normals
    Skin (Vertex Selection, etc)
    FFD (Control Points)
    Hair and Fur

  12. Make columns in Asset Tracker sortable

    The asset tracking window is an invaluable tool for re-pathing bitmaps, etc, but it can be a real hassle to sort through dozens (or hundreds) of lines of assets to select missing maps (especially when importing from other scenes.

    It would be extremely helpful if the asset tracker columns were sortable. You'd be able to sort by filename, path, or status. Some filtering would help as well.

    Please add support for Geometry caching like maya. its really hard to work with large polys and scene that has thousands of objects. so that we can work without slowing down our pc.

  15. Scene Explorer Search-box: Advanced Searching Capabilities

    Things like multi-word searching, using wild card characters to narrow or broaden a search, for example:

    Typing multiple space separated queries to search for multiple items.
    Using '+' to search for multiple matches within a name..
    Using '-' to exclude items/strings from the search
    Using '~' to indicate ranges of numbers
    Using Quotes for exact matches.

  16. All Editable spline tools available in Track view for keys. and segments between.

    There are a lot of really great tools I could use for working with keys in Editable Spline that are not in Track View. Examples Copying just the tangent characteristics of a key without changing the value of a Key. Filet or Chamfer of a single key for better quick curve expression. Hide and Show for keys to clean up just what I want to see. The ability to divide a segment between 2 keys to put a user specified mount of keys in. The ability to select and grab a selection between 2 keys to bring both values up.…

  17. Consistency in selection tools across the 3dsMax Platform

    I am asking for a platform wide review by Autodesk of all it's tools for selection consistency. Example: Hair and Fur Modifier has an option for getting selection sets but is missing Shrink, Grow, Loop, Ring and by Angle as compared to Polyselect and Edit Poly for its face and poly selections. Where it's applicable, every tool that allows selection should have the same list of available selection tools. Selection is the most fundamental of all tools in animation, a robust and consistent set of selection tools allows for better faster everything.

  18. Scene Explorer Frustum Culling Filtering

    Basically add a new filtering mode to the scene explorer that would interactively filter the items in the list based on what is actually visible in the viewport(frustum), imagine working on only a portion of a very complex scene and instead of going through a very long list of items you'd have only the ones that you are looking at automatically filtered for you.

  19. Improve preview animation

    With realistic mode we can create nice and soft animations on the viewport. However preview animation lacks in options to export what we have already on viewport:

    -We need a way to define the iteration we want (right now is a very low iteration and there is no way to change that.
    -Add any resolution we want.
    -Crop or region render taken from render setup.

    We have powerpreview, but for me there is too much information (all quality shadows/occlusion intensities can be taken from the viewport configuration. And has some limitations like doesnt work if 3dsmax is not the active…

  20. View XRef scenes as point clouds

    I sometimes have enormous models going on, and would like to make more use of XRefs, but ultimately the viewport lag is unbearable even when in "Box" view.

    When using plugins such as forest pro & railclone the points cloud option is very often the best for getting significant viewport speed-ups, so having an option like this would be great for XRefs.

    Perhaps including an option to control point cloud density too.
