General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. miauu step edge ring / loop

    Implement this script - It already exists for edges and polys in Maya

    All you need to do is select two edges that are ring loopable and it will automaticly select all the in-between edges.

  2. incorporate importons,irradiance particles and progresive rendering in the user interface

    right now the only way to enable is with plugins but they are not stable.

  7. Map Soloing

    When fine tuning a map, its frequently helpful to see what a specific map or map chain wil look like out of context with how its being used. Like lets say you have a cellular map in the bump slot of a material, and a noise inside the cellular, frequently you want to see just the noise pattern and adjust it till you're happy with it before then seeing the whole pattern in context.   8. Fast Fake Glossy-Reflection/Refraction with post Blur!

    An option to render objects with glossiness=1, than it blur only the reflection/refraction channel of the object with opton active to give a fast and sploch free fake glossy effect!

  9. Enhance Extrude with a boolean option. (more Sketchup-easy approach)

  10. Incorporate V-Ray to 3dsMax

    How the most area that use 3dsMax ?
    How the most used render to this area?

    Until I know, is Architectural presentations, may be the biggest market for 3dsmax.
    and in this area the most used render with 3ds Max is V-Ray.

    Beyond V-ray to be used also in several other areas and studios like Blur Studios.

    May be must be expensive to autodesk But, I think after the above words dont need more arguments.

  11. Incorporate Forest Pack, RailClone, may be also Krakatoa to 3ds Max, and solve your scattering(big amount) problems..

    Many must already gave this idea but, yet not maybe cause must be expensive.

    But, why not incorporate Forest Pack, RailClone, and also Krakatoa to 3ds Max solve your big amount scattering problems?

    Maybe my level is yet very low but, I already tried several ways with only native 3dsmax software solutions, and I very far to got this pluguins facilities solutions.

  13. UV Checker View in Viewport

    Much like we currently can view our objects in the viewport with a wax shader, or with xView to see what faces have their normals flipped, I'd like a viewport mode that applies a checker pattern to all objects so we can check the uvs, see what objects are missing uvs, what objects have messed up uvs, etc, then turn it off to go back to our normal viewing mode.

  14. FFD Box Set Volume is unintuitive and does not effect where the object deforms

    This has been going on for a LONG time but using the sub-object SET VOLUME function to change the shape of the lattice (down to the positions of the individual points) does not affect where the object deforms.

    I expect : Set volume should allow the user re-define the base position of each vertex in the grid. Set Volume should allow each vertex to be moved individually. Control points then create a deformation relative to this base position.

    What actual happens: Set volume has no effect. Vertices can be moved but this does not actually effect the base position of…

  15. Under object properties - Separate "visible to reflection/refraction" into two separate fields, individual check boxes.

    When accessing object properties, instead of having reflection and refraction linked together, separate them into two individual fields. This will be an enormous time saver when working with images or footage that will have 3D integrated on top, and allow the user to see a more final result sooner, before the 3D is brought into a compositing program.

  17. Affine UV transformations

    It would be great if it was possible to get some affine UV transformations with the UV editor. The transformation tool in the UV editor looks a lot like photoshop's transformation tool except that it is only possible to rotate and scale meshes along the X and Y axis. It would be great if we could have things like Skew,shear, corner pinning, bending, and other such effects or the possibility of moving/rotating the pivot around so I could rotate a UV island 45 degrees and then move the element up and down in local space on this rotated axis.

  18. improve quality of populate meshes

    When I use populate people in my projects I often get told they look like balloons. They just don't look very appealing nor natural, even the high res versions.

  19. Oculus Rift support

    Native Oculus Rift support for the Nitrous viewport in 3DS Max to preview models in virtual reality. It would be a great feature for client presentations of work in progress and in general a great time saver in VR production.

  20. weight hammer

    A tool that applies the average of surrounding weight values to selected vertices. It is called weight hammer in Maya and it is great time saver for fixing skin weights.
