General Feature Requests

PURPOSE
Please help us collect ideas for new features and general product enhancements.

Remember, if your idea is a small tweak or defaults change then please use either the Default Settings or Small Annoying Things forums.

What’s on your top ten list? Add a vote to any idea you also think is important!

HOW TO USE THE FORUM

  • Each user has 20 votes for each forum
  • Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
  • If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
  • The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will be considered
  • When an idea is implemented (or declined), votes are returned to all the users that voted
  • Users can change their votes at any time
  • Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
  • We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

How can we improve Autodesk 3ds Max?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. Scene Explorer Frustum Culling Filtering

    Basically add a new filtering mode to the scene explorer that would interactively filter the items in the list based on what is actually visible in the viewport(frustum), imagine working on only a portion of a very complex scene and instead of going through a very long list of items you'd have only the ones that you are looking at automatically filtered for you.

  2. Improve preview animation

    With realistic mode we can create nice and soft animations on the viewport. However preview animation lacks in options to export what we have already on viewport:

    -We need a way to define the iteration we want (right now is a very low iteration and there is no way to change that.
    -Add any resolution we want.
    -Crop or region render taken from render setup.

    We have powerpreview, but for me there is too much information (all quality shadows/occlusion intensities can be taken from the viewport configuration. And has some limitations like doesnt work if 3dsmax is not the active…

  3. View XRef scenes as point clouds

    I sometimes have enormous models going on, and would like to make more use of XRefs, but ultimately the viewport lag is unbearable even when in "Box" view.

    When using plugins such as forest pro & railclone the points cloud option is very often the best for getting significant viewport speed-ups, so having an option like this would be great for XRefs.

    Perhaps including an option to control point cloud density too.

  4. Pflow render FAST like Multiscatter or Forest pack

    In multiscatter or forest pack, the object render much faster than expected. Is there any way to have Pflow generate like this? Pflow is powerful, but the render time is the problem.

  5. Colour coded Graph editor

    Selecting sets in max graph editor is great but being able to colour code each graph as in Maya would be an amazing help to animators.

  6. Update Morpher modifier (animation)

    The morpher modifier needs unlimited channels as in Maya, This makes Max completely useless for High end animations that exclusively use Morph targets. Also It should be able to group the channels like Morph o matic. overall the morpher hasn't been changed for years and needs a serious update for Max to compete with other software.

  7. Bring back pre 2014 Gizmo and related keyboard shortcuts

    Bring back gizmo appearance and behavior from 2013

    I did like 3dsmax 2015.
    It has less bugs, and unified the controls from Edit Poly and Editable Poly

    But completely messed my workflow:

    Summarizing:
    - X keyboard shortcut back to Transform Gizmo Toggle;
    - Transform Gizmo Toggle that hides and prevents accidental selection of other directions, as it was before;
    - Snaps (Keyboard S) that don't disable the Transform Gizmo Toggle, when turnt on.

    OR, AT LEAST GIVE AN OPTION TO DO THE SWITCH

  8. UVW UnWrap interface to include vector output for Illustrator or Corel Draw

    A vector output option for the 'render uvw template' . Vector graphics offer more precise control for editing than bitmaps (even when bitmaps are embedded into a vector drawing file. I am endlessly tracing bitmaps in CorelDraw or Illustrator to achieve 'tricky topology unfolding' when mapping graphics for production output to 'real life' large structures

  9. Composite material like composite map needed

    Sure that will be great. Combine by blend materual, shellac material etc. too hard on many cases

  10. write Python inside Max

    We need to write Python Code straight inside Max and do not want to write it outside and the load it in. do it as you did it in maya for instance. That would be great!

  11. Object properties as a dockable window

    The Object Properties Window should be a dockable window instead of a modal window.

    So it update with every object you select, and you can change any option without breaking your workflow.

  12. DWF import for Max

    Most Autodesk software export DWF format - including Max. However there's no import option for that. Max should have DWF-import.

  13. Stop the layers dropdown list when in the toolbar jumping up/down when hiding/unhiding layers in a long list, it jumps all over the place

    I have the layers toolbar next to the render buttons in the main toolbar ribbon area.
    I have a long list of layers, and when i hide/undhide a layer using this dropdown list as its a long list it then jumps each time and moves the whole list up or down, so i have to scroll and find the next layer to hide.

    This is really annoying, and a simple fix!

  14. support splines in volume select

    currently a volume select modifier applied to a spline object will convert it to a mesh. this is like a bad bug which, not knowing the underlying issues, feels a lot like a lazy, incomplete attempt in coding the volume select modifier. it's super-powerful, but incomplete!

  15. complete maxscript access to spline objects and modifiers

    Maxscript currently only has access to some of the base spline object parameters and NO access to edit_spline or spline_select modifiers.
    This makes scripting complex tools for spline objects very difficult.

    At the very least, the soft_selection parameters of the spline base object NEED to be exposed.

  16. Isolate elements within an object.

    Allow users to isolate elements that are attached to eachother. This would allow users to work on objects that might be difficult to work with once they are attached to a larger whole.

    Another possible idea would be to design a button that utilizes Freeze and the opacity tool (default Alt+X) in one button. This would freeze all other elements, while still showing them, but allowing a 360 degree view and access to the element the user needs to work on.

    meaning, a software similar to Adobe Bridge.

  18. Make Stereo Camera tools usable with Network Rendering

    Right now, the Stereo Camera Extension can only be used with the Batch renderer, which crashes a lot. Would be a nice workaround to use the network renderer, which will then restart rendering. However, when you try to submit the batch render job to Backburner, not the selected camera will be rendered but some random Perspective. Would be nice if the camera was renderable.

  19. instancing implementation for all copy paste within max

    throughout max we can copy past all sorts of thing but only select areas get paste as instance it would be very handy to be able to do this with anything that can be instanced for example colors in materials can be instanced controllers or input values. this would be so much easier than trying to wire parameters ..which is kind of buggy at times.

    make normal maps the same for max, maya, mudbox....
