Default Settings
PURPOSE
Please tell us which user defaults settings you change the most. Enter a description of the default or ini setting and then see how the community votes on it.
Remember these are only the user preferences you can either set in the interface or ini files. Other requests will be considered a feature request and moved to either the Small Annoying Things or General Feature Requests.
Please be clear which version you are using, 3ds Max or 3ds Max Design, since they have different defaults.
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

Default Viewport Clipping to "Infinity"
Working extremely close on vertices, whether the object is large or small can be difficult because of viewport clipping. Portions of the mesh appear to disappear. Leaving the clipping to the max and min values eliminates this issue and should be default.

Display selected wireframe, even if it lays exactly behind another object (as in Softimage XSI)
In Xsi if you select an Object it is displayed in all Viewports regardless another Object Wireframe is visually above the Selected one.

Display Reflectance & Transmittance Information
I do not think the "Display Reflectance & Transmittance" should fall under the Radiosity tab; personally, I think it should be an automatic feature that displays from within all base materials within the Slate editor.

Unwrap UVW: Normalize should be off
Who actually uses normalize? It wrecks up scale between objects. Turn it off by default so you don't have to keep unchecking it when you add the modifier.

additive alpha setting
Changing the additive alpha as described in the helpfile to be on by default, rather than the user having to edit 3dsmax.ini for every render node.
There doesn't seem to be any advantage to it being off, as without it, it would just be comped as add or screen anyway.

Visibility Track Default = On in Curve Editor/Dope Sheet
It's clumsy to have to create a visibility track in the Dope Sheet of the Curve Editor, then add keys to it. Visibility tracks should be active for all renderable objects, and should be always visible in both the Dope Sheet and the Curve Editor unless specifically hidden. A floating window/tool that allows you to animate visibility for selected objects (like the Viz Animator script) would be great.

Default light drop-down should be Standard, not Photometric.
Default Create Light drop-down should be Standard, not Photometric (at least in 3ds max, not 3ds max Design.) Unless I'm specifically doing architectural visualization, I never use photometric lights.

Generate UV coordinates enabled by default for splines.
I can't think of the number of times I have made a spline and forgot to give it UV's. There is no quick way to add these after the fact, and I can't think of a time I wished a spline didn't have UV's.

Q = Select Object only (no cycle)
Q should default to Select Object, not Smart Select Object. One thing that happens to newbies a lot, is that they hit Q several times, which changes the selection mode from Rectangle to Lasso or Spray, and then they don't know how/why it happened.

Selection List and Select From Scene toggle
I often miss the "Selection Floater", so I have to set it up in each release so that it shows on a custom toollbar. The main reason I miss the "Selection Floater" is because I find it to be easy and not over cluttered like the "Select From Scene" dialog box; therefore, I think it would be cool if we had a way to toggle between these two floaters.

Default Scale of Procedural Maps in material editor should be 50
Default scale in the material editor should look similar to the viewport/render!

switch the spacebar hotkey
switch the spacebar hotkey (lock) to something more productive, like a maximize viewport (alt+W). like maya I think. or switch to show all textures on all objects with lights

Statistics Default Count should be Triangles
Right now the default type of count is polygons. This feature is most useful for games, where triengles matter, and in any case the measurement of "fill rate" is in triangles; not polygons.

Add Select Instances to Quad Menu
Add the "Select Instances" option to the Quad Menu right under "Select Similar". There is a difference between what they do and it would be helpful to already have this added.

1 Default for Material Slots with DesignViz.MR
The default setting for the DesignViz.mentalray Custom UI is to have a generic selection of MR based materials. Why not a default A&D material in each slot? This selection seems a bit odd. It should be the same as the Max.mentalray setting.
