For those that still want to see selection brackets: J is the default hotkey to toggle them on/off.

I'm constantly turning selection brackets off because I too prefer edged faces. Both turned on at the same time can cause minor confusion as well (white lines on white lines).

Edged Faces = like in Maya, yes?
This would prevent me from seeing the normally shaded object without any edges when modeling, for example. I am no fan of the selection brackets, in fact I often turn them off with the 'J' hotkey but 'display selected with edged faces' is a poor alternative IMHO
