Default Settings

PURPOSE
Please tell us which user defaults settings you change the most. Enter a description of the default or ini setting and then see how the community votes on it.

Remember these are only the user preferences you can either set in the interface or ini files. Other requests will be considered a feature request and moved to either the Small Annoying Things or General Feature Requests.

Please be clear which version you are using, 3ds Max or 3ds Max Design, since they have different defaults.

HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

This forum is about improvements to the SDK or Script-related.

How can we improve the default settings (ini tweaks) for Autodesk 3ds Max & 3ds Max Design?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.

  1. Make edge ring be with this shortcut command SHIFT+Double mouse click

    Just as double mouse click works for selecting edge loops, SHIFT+double mouse click should work for edge rings

  2. Remove "6" as the default shortcut for Particle Flow

    The default shortcut key "6" for Particle Flow creates ParticleFlow Objects without any notice. It could be used to toggle sub-object mode for Editable Poly/Mesh to go out of sub-object mode.

  3. increase "snap radius"

    IMHO "Snap Preview Radius" (default: 30 px) and "Snap Radius" (default: 20px) are to small.

    Bigger values as default makes sense, isn't it?

  4. Gamma correction off by default

    Users working with normal maps will know that scenes using gamma correction are a pain and many new users do not understand why they have normal map seams all over the place.

  5. Lower the "blur" property for bitmaps

    The default "blur" is 1.0 which is too high in most situations. A lower value would be better.

  6. Change Hotkey for ALT Quad Menu

    Change it by default for example to CTRL+SHIFT+RMB. Reason for that is the new Maya Navigation. If you use that, the original Alt-Quad has just gone. And it´s a bit annoying to change that for yourself only because you want to use another navigation method. And in a production environment it´s better to have consistent hotkeys for most animators, modelers etc.

    this value from years age be 6 and for now this value is low
    I think 10 value is suitable

  8. Covert local file paths to relative

    Please make this setting as default in Preference settings. I mostly forget to set this thing. I was told to do it each time I do in another computer. Or make the Start Wizard for fresh start whether to enable it or not.

  9. Remove Alt+W from Editable Mesh target mesh

    Each time I import model from Revit or any type. I couldn't toggle viewport with E.mesh. So annoying. Can you just remove Weld Target Mode for Editable Mesh as default?

  10. Add Shift+B as keyboard shortcut for Hide By Category - Bones toggle

    To be consistent with the other Hide By Category shortcuts, there should be a shortcut for hiding bones. Shift+B makes sense, and I don't believe it is used currently.

    This would complement Shift+H for helpers, Shift+G for geometry, shift+C for cameras, shift+L for lights, etc.

  11. R = Scale Object and not Smart Scale.

    Maybe shift R can be Smart Scale. Photoshop feels very natural. B for brush. Shift B for cycling brush tools.

    Something 3dsmax should include as default in the later version.

  14. Set standard display for material browser to text. Thumbs takes to long to load....!

    When loading material libraries it is by standard set to thumbnail view and can take forever to either change to text or to get it all loaded in.

    Have it set to text as default.

  16. Ctrl+Shift+S: Save As...

    Make "Ctrl+Shift+S" the default hotkey for "Save As..." like in most apps (currently unused shortcut in Max).

  17. z == zoom extents all selected

    in 2013 the z hotkey changed from “zoom extents all selected” to “zoom extents selected”

    I think the the old behavior is better.

  18. include help files as default

    The online help pages are to slow. Please include the help files as default back into 3dsmax...

    Yes, we can download it from http://www.autodesk.com/3dsmax-helpdownload-enu but it takes time.

  19. Set default import filter

    It would save time if I could set the default import filter based on my needs in the 3dsmax.ini file instead of changing it all the time.

  20. detach right click menu

    add "Detach" to right-click quad menu when modelling... it makes no sense to me that it's not right there under "Attach"
