Default Settings
PURPOSE
Please tell us which user defaults settings you change the most. Enter a description of the default or ini setting and then see how the community votes on it.
Remember these are only the user preferences you can either set in the interface or ini files. Other requests will be considered a feature request and moved to either the Small Annoying Things or General Feature Requests.
Please be clear which version you are using, 3ds Max or 3ds Max Design, since they have different defaults.
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Small Annoying Things
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that really should be fixed.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

mr Physical sky sun disc
It would be nice if the sun in the mr Phys sky map was disabled as default since it doubles up with the mr sun.

Preview selection "on" by default
"Preview selection" should definitely be on by default. It greatly aids modeling by giving visual feedback about the element to be selected. It's so much easier selecting vertex/edge/poly when you know the result in advance.

Lower default Arch&Design reflectivity
The reflectivity parameter for a new Arch&Design material is 0.6, which is too high most of the time. A lower value would be more useful, especially for new users.

skylight should default to pure white
For some reason, the default Skylight as it's created has a color that's a little bit blue. With all due respect, I'll choose what color I want. All this does is add a bit of confusion. Especially for new people when they bring a Skylight bake into Photoshop and then wonder why everything has a blue tint to it.

add iteration settings to "make preview" dialog
Ambient Occlusion is very bad in "makr preview". Add Iterations settings to make preview dialog for setup quality of AO.

24 frames per second as default
Since most TV and Film is 24 fps these days, that should be the default rather than 30.

Ability to "save as" in 2010 as default
With the ability to downsave to 2010, it would be great if you could save all your 2012 files as 2010. when handing files off to other companies, not everyone has the latest max and this could reduce wasted time.

Shift + Drag a poly should extrude. like it does for edges. NOT make a new poly.

Softimage has this. Think of all the times you have to go click the extrude or press Shift + E then click and drag, then click back to move/select another edge.

Default IBL support for A&D shaders/Car paint/etc
Activate by default the support for IBL mental ray string options.
The current workaround is to edit the mi files.

Q = Select Object only (no cycle)
Q should default to Select Object, not Smart Select Object. One thing that happens to newbies a lot, is that they hit Q several times, which changes the selection mode from Rectangle to Lasso or Spray, and then they don't know how/why it happened.

switch the spacebar hotkey
switch the spacebar hotkey (lock) to something more productive, like a maximize viewport (alt+W). like maya I think. or switch to show all textures on all objects with lights

Remove vault plugin from the default install
I don't know why the vault plugin is installed as default, it makes a mess in the asset tracking for those who doesn't use vault. Can you please remove it from the default install?

Redo
The shortcut for Redo should be something like Ctrl+Shift+Z
New users don't see a use for Redo because the two shortcuts are far apart on the keyboard. But it's a good way to flip back and forth between a change to see what it looks like before/after.

Change the Path Constraint percent controller from Linear Float to Bezier Float by default.
Objects controlled by a path constraint have unrealistic linear keys by default. A lot of people don't even know this can be changed. A bezier float makes the path movement much more natural.

Default light drop-down should be Standard, not Photometric.
Default Create Light drop-down should be Standard, not Photometric (at least in 3ds max, not 3ds max Design.) Unless I'm specifically doing architectural visualization, I never use photometric lights.

Default Viewport Clipping to "Infinity"
Working extremely close on vertices, whether the object is large or small can be difficult because of viewport clipping. Portions of the mesh appear to disappear. Leaving the clipping to the max and min values eliminates this issue and should be default.

Auto key default frame = 0 for 3ds max design
In the design flavor, the default key-frame is created at frame 1 by default. This is inconsistent with files coming from max, and introduces bugs in CAT.

Noise modifier shouldn't have phase animated by default
For those like me who only use the noise modifier for modeling. Every time we add one in the modifier stack, we have to remove the phase keys...

Default Scale of Procedural Maps in material editor should be 50
Default scale in the material editor should look similar to the viewport/render!
