Small Annoying Things

PURPOSE
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that might benefit from a second look.

Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

Feature ideas considered too big will simply be moved to the General Feature Requests forum; suggestions for new defaults should go into the Default Settings forum.

Add your vote to any idea if you also think this is an annoying behavior that needs to be fixed.

HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

  1. Switching between viewports via hotkeys doesn't remember last view

    I tend to work in one maximized viewport, and it drives me crazy when I switch from a Perspective view to another view via either a keyboard shortcut or the V-key and then want to go back to my previous Perspective view that it simply takes the current view and makes it a 'perspective' view from the same angle. So if I go from Persp to Top, then want to go back to Persp, it shows me a top perspective view instead of my last Perspective viewing angle.   2. Prevent Object Creation on a Hidden Layer

    If you turn off a layer then at present there is no warning that this operation is invalid - you just don't see anything until you unhide the layer. 3ds max needs to trap this error and throw up a dialog warning you that the layer is hidden.

  3. faster material preview generation

    since Slate introduction, material preview is much slower, needs to be the same as it was with the old mat editor

  4. Copy and Paste between Max instances

    The ability to copy and paste objects between instances of 3ds max would greatly improve workflow. I already have a scripted solution but I rely on it so heavily I feel it should ship with Max.

  5. mirroring objects should not result in flipped normals

    When mirroring an object or elements of it, max flips the faces / normals.
    To reset the matrix you have to apply a Reset xform and flip the normals. This should happen automaticaly without having to collaps the whole stack of the object

  6. Pause Button For mentalray

    A Pause button for mentalray would be really, really useful. The renderer is so good at using all the cores on my machine that I am unable to multitask, I can't quickly switch to another program while it's rendering, I have to cancel, or wait for the render to finish. A Pause button would let me quickly switch to say my email, or Notepad to write something down quickly, or ACDSee to quickly check out an image before resuming the render.

  7. A real picking tool ! selecting ALWAYS the first thing in Z-depth when operating a pick

    3dsmax picking (selecting) has always been something autodesk should be ashamed of.
    Please correct this, and allow for a real select and pick tool, like all other package, which will select the very first object under the cursor.

  8. Material Override needs an Exclude Material Slot

    It's great that we can use one material to override the entire scene. But we need the ability to keep certain materials from being over-ridden.

  9. remove missing maps

    When you open a scene with a whole lot of maps missing, would Like a option to just REMOVE/DELETE that map from the scene.

    or even in the Asset tracking, just a option to delete the map or file from the scene

  10. Zooming in decrases the movement of camera

    In a huge scene after a certain point when you zoom in (in perspecive view.) you cant pan the camera or zoom more in it gets very slow unless you zoom out again. To work around this i have to select something small and close zoom into that object and then pan over to what i really want to edit.

  11. 3dsmax should accept "," and "." as decimal separator

    IMHO it would be good if we can insert values with "," or with "." as decimal separator.

  12. Same buttons and actions in UVW as viewport, e.g shift clicking edges selects the loop

    Selection inside the UVW window is horrid. it needs stuff that's already in max, such as shift clicking edges to select the loop/row

    Double clicking to select the whole island.

    FFDs inside the uvw window

    and changing the move/rotate/scale gizmo's to the same as the ones in the 3d view.

    what I'm saying is make the uvw window feel like its max and not like you have to learn new buttons

  13. + general UI The "clown button" is a confusing thing and bad UI design, option to remove it.

    If Autodesk is trying to unify UI all along its programs, why MAYA, Softimage, MudBox and so on...DON'T have the clown button AKA the very large button on the top left alà Office?
    It does things that were perfectly done fine in previous versions. It's just plain wrong with the UI that we have now. Just make it as a standard toolbar button, if you wanna keep it.
    It's in the middle, half on the top bar and half on the menù bar... it's just bad UI design. please put an option to remove it and revert to the standard…

  14. Switching renderers forgets previous settings

    If you set up your mental ray settings and then switch to quicksilver. When you go back to mental ray, all of your settings are reset.

  15. max files remembering project folders

    When I open a maxfile, max should ask me if it should automatically point to the project folder from the file I opened

  16. Built in quad primitives

    Need a sphere (and ellipsoid) where the topology is in quads, avoiding the singularity at the poles.

  17. scale of procedural maps in the viewport

    The scale of the 2D representation of procedural maps can only be changed for the previews in the material editor, while the maps used in the viewport have a fixed scale, which is far off the actual size in the rendering most of the time. It would be nice to have a better viewport preview of the actual scale of the map on the model.

  18. reset all windows positions

    It happens every once in a while... a window, like the material editor or the environment panel, for instance, won't show up when opened, they're somewhere outside the monitor's resolution. As opposed to manually look for those windows positions on ini files or sometimes reconfiguring dual monitors layout, it would be good to have a "reset all windows positions" and move all windows back to the center of the main 3dsmax window.

  19. An option to keep the last rendered frame visible in the frame buffer while rendering a new one

    This is an option that was available in older version of Max where you could keep the last rendered frame visible, while the new one is being rendered on top of it.

  20. Missing texture maps and UV maps that comes up during rendering or network rendering.

    There should be an option in the rendering window to turn off Missing UV and bitmaps Nag so a render can continue on regardless. Specially for network rendering. Most of the time if I cannot see them missing during my test renders I do not need them.
    For geometry with missing UV's an option to assign a UV box map automatically to missing UV's would be handy.
