Small Annoying Things

PURPOSE
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that might benefit from a second look.

Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

Feature ideas considered too big will simply be moved to the General Feature Requests forum; suggestions for new defaults should go into the Default Settings forum.

Add your vote to any idea if you also think this is an annoying behavior that needs to be fixed.

HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

  1. Unhide All should reveal Hidden Categories.

    Sometimes people use Hide by Category to hide objects. When another person opens the file they may not realize there are hidden objects in the scene because Unhide All doesn't really Unhide All.

  2. TV element shortcut

    IN MAX2012 ( not tested in 2013 )
    When setting up a shortcut for the TV element Mode in the UVW Unwrap UI, the shorcut only works when the edit UVW window isn't active/focused. (so you have to be in the viewport for example to press your shortcut, and then come back to the UVW window)

    Also the icon doesn't get updated when a Maxscript toggles the state of the TV element Mode.

  3. Recalculation of PFlow: Only forward / Turn Off / Manual Update

    Working on PFlow the automated updater can be quite annoying, especially in heavier simulations.

    You change a value, bing! wait for the update. The same goes for backward dragging of the time-slider.

    Escaping turns off the PFlow, which annoys a lot.

    Maybe an option to do update only when previewing from start / doing forward motion ?

    now we only have cotton properties !!

    for exam : Silk,carpet,Leather and etc

  5. Particle Flow Events are invisible in Layer Menu

    When creating PFlow-Elements the included events are not displayed in the Layer-Dialogue. They also can not be moved and are stuck on some arbitrary layer activated at the time. Therefor can not be turned off by hiding etc. controlled by Layers properly

    Make them visible in the layer-dialogue, so you can access them / hide them, etc. OR make them all relate to one "Master"-P-Flow Element ( but then you may generate multiple PFlow's ...

  6. Faster loading of large maps into bitmap preview window (HDRs specifically)

    When selecting a large bitmap from the bitmap loading menu, the map should load (perhaps in a mip map fashion) as a small thumbnail preview instead of spending time loading the entire map into memoery and then displaying the map in the preview window. This is especially irritating when I am trying to select a hdr and I have to wait 10-30 seconds for the map to load in the preview window in order to see if that is the map I want to choose.

  7. Command panel or modifier stack under the mouse pointer

    I have to go to the command pannel too often to switch between modifiers.
    I believe it would be nice to have the option of right clicking anywhere on the viewport to have either the command pannel or just the modifier stack under the mouse pointer. That way it would be easy to work on expert mode.

  8. Compositor Link shouldn't create unneccesary keyframes for non-moving objects in After Effects

    The Compositor Link feature creates unnecessary keyframes for objects that don't move. This slows down the import in After Effects and bloats the Project files.
    The system should be so smart to detect whether an object is moving over the time range or not.
    A further improvement would be a simple function to reduce keys for flat parts in the animation curve.

  9. Allow "Enter Key" to access OK when creating new layer

    Each time you create new layer. It will show a dialogue and let you type the name of new layer. But the thing is you "can't Enter Key" to accept without using mouse to click OK button. It's a small annoy thing exactly.

    Please let us "Enter Key" to accept without moving the mouse to click.

    now we can't align objects and other things with groups !

    Cap Holes Modifier should have a material ID options. Currently there are no options for this, but it should be simple to add this feature to enable Material ID options for the cap and the source.

  14. Function for easy scene reload in iray activeshade

    When using iray as the activeshade renderer in a viewport (which is awesome), you frequently have to close the activeshade preview, then re-launch it for iray/max to re-evaluate the scene.

    Simple things like moving lights, objects, etc do not need the scene to be re-evaluated. But altering a light's properties or changing a material does need the activeshade window to be closed, then re-opened, which is slow.

    Some control (a button?) which forces the scene to be re-evaluated would be great.

  15. Automatically create invalid directories while rendering

    Generate directories that don't exist. When you customize the text path for a render element, it will error out on render if the directory doesn't exist. You have to click on the path icon, create folder, name it, set path. This would be helpful particularly if there are render tokens.

  16. String tokens for render output and render elements path

    'Tokens' for render output and render elements. Path and filename strings to automate multiple output entries. Strings like 'Scene Name', 'Camera', 'Render Element', etc. That way you could just fill in something like: \GenericProjectName\renders\(sceneName)\(camera)\(renderElement).png - Files would automatically be outputted into folders per render element per camera per project, etc.

  17. duplicating particle flow emission nodes

    Shift-drag duplicating pflow events and emission nodes causes render errors. The solution is to replace the emission node with a new one. This is a pain in the proverbial.

  18. Default AutoKey On Preference Frame 0 or 1 is not enough

    The Preference Dialog->Animation->Default AutoKey On give you the ability to change the AutoKey frame frome Max=0 to Max Desgin=1.

    You should be able to set this to any frame number to match your studios workflow, so far none have been zero, they have been either 100 or even 1000 as the startFrame.

    I noticed a lot of in-house tools that write animated keyframes for camera tracking, object tracking, ect. get stuck with a bunch of garbage keys at frame 0 or 1.

    These keys would be useful or at the very least easy to delete if the pref could match…

  19. Backburner - Edit settings for multiple jobs

    The ability to edit common settings in backburner jobs. Such as change use all servers from on to off.

  20. Playback head jumping forward

    When manually moving the playback head to the first frame of the timeline it nearly always jumps forward one frame.
