Small Annoying Things

PURPOSE
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that might benefit from a second look.

Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

Feature ideas considered too big will simply be moved to the General Feature Requests forum; suggestions for new defaults should go into the Default Settings forum.

Add your vote to any idea if you also think this is an annoying behavior that needs to be fixed.

HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

  1. material name box too small

    The material name box in the compact material editor does not fully use the amount of UI space available. So material names cannot be fully viewed. The box could be extended to the left at least another 60 or 70 pixels. Seems like a small thing to change.

  2. Material Override needs an Exclude Material Slot

    It's great that we can use one material to override the entire scene. But we need the ability to keep certain materials from being over-ridden.

  3. Viewport settings should be remembered after restarting

    Some are and some aren't. The viewcube stays off when you turn it off, but viewport statistics always need to be reset after starting Max. I know I can save a "MaxStart" file, but I shouldn't need to. All the settings should consistently be either remembered or not.

  5. collapse utility does not show progress and is not cancellable

    collapse utility has an internal n-square loop that locks out the system for minutes if not hours when trying to collapse thousands of objects togheter.

    it should at least show progress info and an option to be cancelled in the middle of the job.

    additionnally, the attach algorithm can be revised to be much more effective by dividing the job in smaller chuncks to avoid this nth square delay

  7. asset tracker does not refresh on launch

    launching the ATS dialog does not refresh its data. inevitably resulting into clicking on refresh button right away....

  8. Built in quad primitives

    Need a sphere (and ellipsoid) where the topology is in quads, avoiding the singularity at the poles.

  9. textedit boxes for all save/load

    I would KILL to have textedit boxes for file save/load/bitmap paths, etc, basically ANYTHING we have to press a button to pop a path dialogue should (imo) have a editbox to easily paste a path directly into, long with a little browse button to the side of it.

  10. Ctrl+click for sub object mode selection transfer for the Unwrap UVW modifier does not exist

    The Unwrap UVW modifier does not mimick the functionality found in the Editable Poly or Edit Poly modifiers/class in that if you have a selection, then hold CTRL and left click on another SO mode, your selection is not transfered to that new Sub Object type.

  11. mental ray "Missing Map File" error

    The dreaded "Missing Map File" error that pops up as soon as you switch to mr and open or render. "glare_streaks_star_camera_filter.tif" set in the camera output shader slot by default.

  12. Option to not add default light to rendering

    If there is no light present in the scene, 3ds Max will add a default light when rendering. This is unwanted when using image-based lighting, for example. So the user has to add a light, just to turn it off. This causes the viewport to become dark. There is an option to light the viewport with default lights, but I would prefer a render option for not adding any light sources that are not present.

  13. Restore large Undo buttons

    By loading the 3dsmax2009 UI scheme in the Customize > Custom UI and Defaults Switcher, we get the large Undo buttons back, that also have the dropdown menu for un-/redoing more than one step.

  14. Cannot sort columns in Asset Tracker

    This is particularly annoying with large scenes when you need to select a range of items to re-path. You often must select out of sequence.

  15. FCurve editor autozooms after each click when editing curve with timeline not 0-100

    When you are zoomed in on a curve and have the section you are interested in framed up nicely in the curve editor, Moving or selecting a key or tangent handle causes the graph to autozoom to show the whole curve and also shows the other axis. This only happens if your animationRange is not 0-100

  16. Create Lights Drop Down to Adapt to Current Renderer

    When creating a new light, it is current set to Photometric Lights by default. Unfortunately, this is not the best default if you use max entertainment for example vray or brazil. This should be customizeable and defined by the active renderer.

  17. Environment Map’s default mapping should be Spherical

    When assigning a map to the environment slot, the default coordinate mapping should be spherical.

  18. main toolbar does not scroll

    In earlier versions of 3dsmax, the entire main toolbar could be dragged left or right to display toolbars that were off screen. this allowed you to section of the main toolbar into different sets of tools for different tasks, without taking away vertical space from the viewport by having to stack rows of toolbars on top of each other. Currently, this drag behavior only works for the toolbar that is partially off screen. So if only one tool of the toolbar is visible, the dragging of the toolbar only happens within that area. That is really annoying, trying to drag…

  19. Transform Type In always shows effective coordinates, not controller values

    The Transform Type In (the three boxes at the bottom center of 3ds Max that show position, rotation, scale) should have a setting to show the current controller values, not always the absolute world coordinates (which is problematic with List controllers, for example).

  20. Helpers don't show "through" other objects if object in front is selected. Need "always on top".

    Using helpers as markers and measurements is difficult when the helpers disappear while you're working on the object.
