PURPOSE
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that might benefit from a second look.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.
Feature ideas considered too big will simply be moved to the General Feature Requests forum; suggestions for new defaults should go into the Default Settings forum.
Add your vote to any idea if you also think this is an annoying behavior that needs to be fixed.
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Switching between viewports via hotkeys doesn't remember last view
I tend to work in one maximized viewport, and it drives me crazy when I switch from a Perspective view to another view via either a keyboard shortcut or the V-key and then want to go back to my previous Perspective view that it simply takes the current view and makes it a 'perspective' view from the same angle. So if I go from Persp to Top, then want to go back to Persp, it shows me a top perspective view instead of my last Perspective viewing angle. Zooming in decrases the movement of camera
In a huge scene after a certain point when you zoom in (in perspecive view.) you cant pan the camera or zoom more in it gets very slow unless you zoom out again. To work around this i have to select something small and close zoom into that object and then pan over to what i really want to edit.

scale of procedural maps in the viewport
The scale of the 2D representation of procedural maps can only be changed for the previews in the material editor, while the maps used in the viewport have a fixed scale, which is far off the actual size in the rendering most of the time. It would be nice to have a better viewport preview of the actual scale of the map on the model.

show frozen in gray option need to be off to default, or remove this option

Lock camera
Whilst looking through cameras, I often pan or rotate by accident. I'd like the ability to lock cameras and restrict all translations totally. As far as I'm aware, current methods of freezing or locking translations currently still allows the camera to be moved whilst looking through it.

Helpers don't show "through" other objects if object in front is selected. Need "always on top".
Using helpers as markers and measurements is difficult when the helpers disappear while you're working on the object.

Double Click Face to Select Element
It's quite common to have a number of attached objects. For example, if you use the Scatter Compound object to apply rocks to the ground, and then you collapse the scatter, you will get a single Editable Poly that contains a number of surfaces. Each surface is called an element.
Preview Selection now allows us to quickly switch between vertex, edge and face mode by hovering over the subobject in question. Viewport settings should be remembered after restarting
Some are and some aren't. The viewcube stays off when you turn it off, but viewport statistics always need to be reset after starting Max. I know I can save a "MaxStart" file, but I shouldn't need to. All the settings should consistently be either remembered or not.

Move the camera as we navigate in perspective view.
The title its self explanatory. When you are viewing through a camera it should move as if you were in perspective, alt+middle mouse button=orbit around ,middle mouse button=pan...etc....

Nitrous texture settings
Nitrous viewport should display propper texture filtering (ie. pyramidal, none, etc). And as Open GL, it should have parameter for texture resolution. Possibly integrated with scene states.

We need a "remove viewport background" button
The only way to remove a reference to a bitmap viewport background that we don't use anymore is to use maxscript. Could we just add a button to the viewport background dialog to do this?

particle flow half frame/frame inconsistency
Make the particle count and positioning same in render as in viewport.

Make Preview larger then screen resolution
Make Preview allows only grab viewport that fits current screen resolution. Via scripted screen grabber we can grab viewport larger then screen resolution. It must be allowed with Make Preview.

Smooth zooming about cursor when using mouse wheel
its tiring to keep pressing the z key and use the zoom tool, these should be automatic, i like modeling and keeping my eyes on my model not looking all over just to zoom or find a simple tool such as this, many other applications already do this and this should be basic!!! this should be FIRST on Autodesks list, i don't know why no one has requested this so far. all my other programs have this

Customizable major and minor grid lines color
Please add the option to customize major and minor grid lines color in "Customize User Interface" dialogue box
When you are using dark UI color scheme major grid lines are barely visible which makes it difficult to model a modular geometry

Choosing color of displayed edges for selected objects
When selecting object, selected is always shown in white, and that is annoying and eye intense. Maybe it is not good idea to have option for changing color, but only opacity of white. I think Softimage is having that option.

Edged faces doesn't show properly in Nitrous!
Make the Edged wire bigger cuz it doesn't show all in Edged faces mode due to the pixel or wire is too small. but why directX works just fine?

No way to find out the maximum texture viewport resolution
There is no way to tell how many texels are displayed in the viewport. The only option beyond 1024 is 'Match Bitmap Size As Closely As Possible' in the driver preferences - but how much is that?? This information should at least be added to the Help > Diagnose Video Hardware information.

Frame numbers in previews covered by viewport menus
When you do a preview and turn on Frame Numbers, the actual numbers are located in the same place on the screen as the viewport menus. Should be easy enough to put them somewhere else.

Correct Normal map visualisation in Nitrous viewport
I don't know why Max still doesn't have this feature whereas Maya had this feature by diffault for ages!
We need the abbility to view normal maps on low poly objects in the viewport without having to install additional shaders like Xoliul Shader or 3Point shader and having to switch from Nitrous to Direct3D
Must have feature for game artists.
