PURPOSE
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that might benefit from a second look.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.
Feature ideas considered too big will simply be moved to the General Feature Requests forum; suggestions for new defaults should go into the Default Settings forum.
Add your vote to any idea if you also think this is an annoying behavior that needs to be fixed.
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

preview creation named similar to scene file automatically
The make preview dialog should have a checkbox to name the preview after the scene file automatically. That way it is harder to overwrite (_scene is not very revieling what's going on) and you keep track of it easier without manually copy pasting file names back and forth.

Copying modifiers to a group
When you want to copy a modifier to a group, you always have to add some random modifier in advance to get a "paste" dialouge. It would be great if "paste" is a available on rightclick in the empty modifier field of a group.

"Assign Renderer" should be top Option in Render Setup..
Assigning a renderer is located at the bottom of the Common render Setup dialogue. Usually it is the first thing we want to select. it should be on top.

Selection bracket display should be a preference setting
I'm always turning off selection brackets because there is no checkbox in the preferences window to let me tell Max that I don't want them. There isn't even a MaxScript command I could put in a startup file. I know about the "MaxStart" file, but that's not a good solution for something this basic.

Help windows should be 'always on top'
It's really aggravating to try and read some maxscript documentation while typing out a maxscript but have the maxscript help disappear behind max every time it isn't active. The Documentation needs to be like any other max window and stay on top!

Default output texture type for 'Render to Texture' should be configurable
Render to texture now defaults to Targa (.tga) output. If you want to use .png instead for example for mutiple objects, you have to setup the elements, than change the output type for one object, delete the element on all objects and set it up again to get the proper output file format for all those object. It's not possible to change the output type for all selected objects at once.
Having a configurable default output type (either in Preferences or in the Render to texture dialog box would make this much easier.

Extrude modifier behaviors should be the same
When using Extrude thorugh modifier panel and reuse it again, it remembers the last used value. If you do the same but thorugh a assigned hotkey, it defaults to another value

Render Elements doesn't work with Relative Output Paths
Render Elements output doesn't understand relative paths and returns an error and rendering can't proceed, causes problem with network rendering.

"Slate Compositor Editor" needs navigation (lower right-hand corner) like "Slate Material Editor" !!
like Zoom, Pan, Zoom Extents, Zoom Extents Selected, etc

Volume Select - Soft Selection Consistency
The other selection modifiers (Mesh, Poly, etc) have options for Edge Distance and Affect Backfacing. These options are missing from the volume select modifier.

option to turn off crash report dialog
Max crashes ALL THE TIME, at least once every ten minutes. I hate having to click through those damn dialogues, can we please just turn them off.

no unfreeze selected, only freeze selected and unfreeze ALL.
please add unfreeze selected with frozen objects displayed in an interface like the selection floater

Unwrap UVW: dialogue when moving between channels is confusing
When a user moves between UVW channels, they are given a Channel Change Warning, with two options: "Move" and "Abandon". The text on these buttons is ambiguous and the wording is long-winded and confusing.
I propose using button titles like "Continue using modifier UVWs" and "Load UVWs from model" be used, which will remove the need for so much explanation.

Light Lister columns should be expandable so
Light Lister 'Name' column should be expandable so you can read the whole name of a light that has more than 9 characters.
