Small Annoying Things

PURPOSE
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that might benefit from a second look.

Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

Feature ideas considered too big will simply be moved to the General Feature Requests forum; suggestions for new defaults should go into the Default Settings forum.

Add your vote to any idea if you also think this is an annoying behavior that needs to be fixed.

HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

  1. Turbosmooth snap should work on original mesh, not the smoothed version

    While editing a Turbosmoothed object, working on the Editable Poly underneath. Why does it snap to the vertices of the smoothed object? If I'm editing the low-poly, snapping should be to that. I have to turn the Turbosmooth off temporarily to make vertex snap operations.

  2. Connect edges slide value should be float instead of integer

    When I need to connect edges in an editable poly object, an integer value for sliding is not enough. Usually I need to enter a float value (e.g. 50,12), but it's not possible.

  3. Cap Holes Modifier should have a material ID options.

    Cap Holes Modifier should have a material ID options. Currently there are no options for this, but it should be simple to add this feature to enable Material ID options for the cap and the source.

  4. sub-object snaps to itself while being transformed

    While I'm moving an adge/vertex, it hapens often that it snaps to itself instead to the vertex I actually want to snap to.
    Because the gizmo is exactely on the edge/vertex being transformed, as I get closer to the other vertex I want to snap to, it's too hard not to snap to the edge/vertex that I'm moving.

  5. Extrusion distance not accurate when using Local Normal

    When extruding multiple faces, say the 4 sides of a box, if you try to extrude them all 100cm using Local Normal, they end up extruded 70.711cm. The tool is probably measuring diagonal edge length, when it should measure the total distance the new surface is away from the original.

  6. Ability to Rename Proboolean operand objects

    I want to be able to change the name of the operands after I've added them to a Proboolean object for organization.

  8. Attaching meshes eats all memory thanks to Undo

    Attaching hundreds of meshes into one mesh should not eat up all memory for the Undo stack. There could be a warning dialog with the option to turn off Undo, for example.

  9. add botom Ring and loop in vertex paint menu

    It would be nice, in the modify (vertex color menu) add functionality to quickly selects vertex, faces and polygons (as in edit poly)

  10. Rectangle vertices default as corners

    As an ArchViz modeler, I go through this little sequence constantly:

    1) Draw a rectangle
    2) Right click, convert to Editable Spline
    3) Go to vertex sub-object mode
    3) Select all vertices
    4) Right click and change vertices from bezier-corners to corners.

    I have hotkeys customized to help me speed through this process, but it would still be very helpful to have the vertices default as 'corners' when rectangle shapes are converted to editable splines, or when they are combined with other shapes by unchecking the 'start new shape' box.

  11. The ability to extend more than two polygons from an edge

    Since I remember in max we've beem able to extend only two polygons from an edge. In other words we're allowed to extend only the edges that are in the borders not the edges across the model. And there are many cases that this is really annoying.

    Right now, one workaround for this is the extrude the edge you want to extend and this will create more problems itself. Because after that you will have two overlapping polygons and four vertices at the place of the edge that you extruded. And unfortunately because of what I said before if you…

  12. soft selection sub-rollout should be smaller

    I found myself mostly use the first spinners and checkbox but there is a whole lot of other stuff in this rollout I rarley use and I keep roll it up and down, this is really annoying.

  13. Add bridge settings to quad menu

    unlike most things like extrude connect chamfer and so on where they have a box to the left in quad menu to access more settings, bridge does not and you have to put in bridge and bridge settings as two different things. why not combine it into one like the rest?

  14. View Align under Edit Poly modifier does not seem to work anymore in Max 2013

    When using view align under the edit poly modifier I am unable to align verts, polys or edges to the view. When the stack is collapsed view align works correctly.

  16. Snap on Z-axis in perspective

    e.g.: You are in perspective and snap on the default grid: You can't snap in Z-axis then.

    The "snap on grid" works always on the two axis and not on the third.

  17. Remove mapping gizmo when Displace mod is set to use existing mapping

    Setting the Displace Modifier to use existing mapping does not remove the mapping gizmo. The gizmo should clearly be gone, since it's not needed and only clutters the view.

  18. merge same parameter in "Keyboard Entry" and "Parameters" tab

    remove the double base object parameter from the "Keyboard Entry" tab, because they exist in the "Parameters" tab, too. Just use them from there, if the user click on the "create" button.

    I often failed: First i fill my values in the "Parameters" tab, then i notice the error and do it again in the "Keyboard Entry" tab.
