Small Annoying Things

PURPOSE
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that might benefit from a second look.

Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

Feature ideas considered too big will simply be moved to the General Feature Requests forum; suggestions for new defaults should go into the Default Settings forum.

Add your vote to any idea if you also think this is an annoying behavior that needs to be fixed.

HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

  1. 3dsmax should accept "," and "." as decimal separator

    IMHO it would be good if we can insert values with "," or with "." as decimal separator.

  2. Keyboard shortcut in tooltip

    when I hover over a tool, e.g "Rotate", the tooltip says "Select and Rotate" It would be nice and easy to remember - especially for new users if it displayed the keyboard shortcut associated with that command - for example "Select and Rotate (E)" If the user changes that keyboard combination, the tooltip would update accordingly.

  3. Walk speed control

    Could the walk (footprints in lwr r.h. cnr of UI) please be more controllable with the arrows. The ] and [ keys for speed make it jump. It'd be awesome if the walkthrough were smooth like in AutoCAD, where you can specify the step size (e.g.500mm) and the steps per second for speed.

  4. Mail 3dsmax users if ServicePack/HF available...

    It's really annoying, that we 3dsmax user doesn't get a mail, if a new Hotfix/ServicePack is available!

  5. Restore large Undo buttons

    By loading the 3dsmax2009 UI scheme in the Customize > Custom UI and Defaults Switcher, we get the large Undo buttons back, that also have the dropdown menu for un-/redoing more than one step.

  7. hide incompatible material properties (for iray/Quicksilber)

    e.g.: Many Arch&Design properties would be ignored by iray. These properties should be hide or grey-out in material editor if iray is the productive renderer.

  8. UI and hotkeys master file

    It would be great to have 1 file with all the settings for UI such as panels, colors, quads etc. plus hotkeys in one single file.

  9. Undo isolate

    Include the possibility to undo isolate selection. If I have many objects in my scene and want to isolate some of them, I too often click the wrong objects and isolate them and have to exit isolate mode and start picking again.

  10. Hard to edit maps from a map button

    There is no immediately obvious way for editing a map in a map button.

    Take creating a new environment map as example: you open the environment dialog, click on the map button, assign a map from the list - but now how do you change that?

    You need to open the material editor, and drag and drop the map as instance into it.

    So the (novel) user needs to know three things already: that you need SME to edit the map, that you can use drag and drop to open it in SME (or browse from the scene), and that…

  11. Not being able to edit settings for targets of cameras and lights

    Hi,

    it would be so nice to be able to select the camera target, or the camera target and the camera and still be able to edit the settings. The same goes for Lights and their targets.

  12. Hide bones toggle hotkey

    Every option in "hide by category" tab can be toggled by a shortcut, i.e. shift+L for lights. Only bones can't be hidden via shift+B although, it's not used for something else. Please make this a default shortcut for hiding bones.

  13. Edit UVs from right click menu

    Max's workflow has a lot of extra clicks in the workflow. This may just be an inevitable structural problem. Still, I'd love to be able to open up a window to edit an object's UVs with a single selection from the right click menu. (I'm not sure of the official name for this, "hotbox" maybe?) I can go into vertex, polygon, edge modes and such, and it would be great to just be able to dive into UV editing without needing to apply a modifier *and then* click on the Edit UVWs button.

  14. error report submission opening browser window

    My max crashes a lot. I don't need a "thank you" showing in a browser window ech time I fill error report.

  15. slate material editor optimized nodes dimension

    the nodes in slate material editor are too big without a reason, it would be great to better arrange theyr dimensions, make them more rescalable on demand, put the name of the node outside the node (like in houdini and nuke)
    with a complex scene the slate editor can became incredibly messy and loose efficiency

  17. show texture from materials by default

    when creating a new material, loading a material from library or importing models from autocad or revit, materials to not show their textures by default. this proposal is simply to make it so that the SMIV button is pressed for newly created materials so users see them more correctly in the viewport

  18. ungrouping opened groups

    groups that are open cannot be ungrouped or exploded. you are forced to close a group before getting rid of it.

  20. Mouse wheel should not affect spinners

    Once a number is entered into a spinner box, if you move the mouse wheel over a viewport and attempt to scroll in order to zoom the view; the spinner box will +/- modify the contents of the spinner box a tiny amount instead of zooming the viewport and then de-selects the spinner box, forcing you to reselect it and re-enter the correct value.
