Small Annoying Things

PURPOSE
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that might benefit from a second look.

Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.

Feature ideas considered too big will simply be moved to the General Feature Requests forum; suggestions for new defaults should go into the Default Settings forum.

Add your vote to any idea if you also think this is an annoying behavior that needs to be fixed.

HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.

Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.

Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.

Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

  1. Falloff Map's Distance Blend Doesn't Work With Local or World Axis

    In the falloff map, there's a mode called Distance Blend, which is used to blend between two colors / maps based on distance to the camera.

    But under the Falloff Direction dropdown are other modes, including world and local axis. This seems like the perfect way to blend colors based on the world units. Like for example, if I assigned a material to a cylinder, add a falloff set to Distance Blend in the Diffuse color slot, I pick World Z Axis, and I set the values to 10 and 40, I would expect purple on the cylinder until 10…

  2. Fix Plugin .ini Help File Duplication Issue

    When installing new plugins or updates to plugins they always write a new plugin.ini entry. This may be the plugin devs fault but I also think it is a Max issue by having two plugin.ini files. One in the root and one in local. Just another small waste of time to clean it out. Seems I am doing it once a week sometimes.

    I currently have approx. 10 plugins with as many as 10 Help File entries for each one. Yes I like to RTFM :)

  3. Filesize increase each save afther Motionmixer Tracknote bug. Up to triple or more filesize increase

    At a certain point, 3ds Max starts creating a huge amount of tracknotes in de motionmixer. Resulting in max files of over 100mb instead of 2mb and increasing by each save. Loading takes about 15 / 20 min with machines with over 18 GB RAM and loading from SSD HD.

    Quick dirty fix atm:
    -- Motionmixer notetrack bug removal
    trackViewNodes[#Max_MotionClip_Manager].track = copy trackViewNodes[#Max_MotionClip_Manager].track

    -- Empty memory
    gc()

    Afther editing the scene again, it starts creating tracknotes again and have to run the script everytime before saving the scene.
    My findings: 3ds Max seams to create this strange behaviour afther merging…

  4. can't scroll down in assign controller tab

    As described above.
    Tested on two innstances of 3ds max.
    You can't scroll down in any way - and if you want for example use "link constraint" within one of many CAT layers, you can't !

  5. Zooming far in while creating a spline, results in "Close spline" dialog box and disables zooming afther if clicked "No"

    2012, spline creation and zooming is far, will result in dialog box asking: "close splines: Yes No". If clicked No: zooming doesn't work anymore. Why does this dialog appear out of nothing while zooming in spline creation?

  6. Batch render .bat file

    *.bat file does not start to render scene from Windows. It's just flashes and dissappear

  8. Color Correction Map's Saturation Produces Artifacts

  9. Resource collector leaves behind maps

    The resource collector often does not collect and leaves behind many texture maps. Despite the "collect bitmaps/Photometric Files" box being checked.

    For example I use Zbrush with GoZ a lot. When you create displacement and normal maps and GoZ them over they stay in a temporary Zbrush folder until you move them manually.

    When I use the resource collector on these scenes it often misses those maps.

  10. Playback doesn't play without Real Time checked

    If you turn off Real Time playback in the Time Configuration, in most cases the viewport will not play the animation.

  11. standard max render elements mess up reflections in mental ray

    When I render an object Id or z depth often the reflections in the scene get messed up. So I have to render the scene twice to get everything I need. This costs a lot of time.

  12. Object Paint always creates negatively scaled Objects. This should not be the case.

    I originally posted this on the Area since I thought I was out of votes here.

    When you paint objects with the Object Paint tools in Graphite, the painted objects always have a negative scale. So if you set the Scale X to 100 (default) the scale of all output object is negative! [-1,-1,-1].

    The Object Paint tool actually cannot be used as expected AT ALL if using objects that need to be identical to the source object because of the scale problem. I thought that I could easily circumvent the problem by changing the Object Paint Scale from 100…

  13. Bridge doesn't work with "use last" button when modeling.

    I use Bridge all the time, and it just doesn't work with the Use Last modeling button. Connect works fine, collapse works fine, but no love for bridge?

  14. Backburner: render with stripes applies gamma correction twice

    When rendering using backburner and using stripes, the images get gamma corrected twice, because the render of the stripe is already gamma corrected and then, the pass of stitching the stripes together applies gamma again...

  15. Brief flicker of quad menus when desktop composition's enabled enabled (Windows 7)

    When desktop composition is enabled in Windows 7 (and probably Vista), the quad menu lags when right-clicking the viewport (just long enough for it to constantly disrupt my workflow). Now, I'm opening the quad menu a LOT, so you can imagine what a pain this is every time.

    For now, I have to disable and re-enable desktop composition from Window 7's "Performance Options", but it'd be REALLY nice to have this irritant fixed.

  16. Merging spring controllers confusion.

    Make 2 points, link p2 to p1. Assign a spring controller to the second point. Add a couple of keyframes to p1's position to get the spring moving. Save the file. Merge both objects back in. (keeping same name) p2 that got merged in will now be driven by the original p1 even though it's still linked to p1 that it got merged with. Workaround is that the object with the spring controller needs to have a different name than the one that exists in the scene

  17. F3 + pan in Shaded mode = can't change back to Shaded mode

    In Max 2012 if you enter Wireframe mode while panning you cannot go back to Shaded mode. Try it yourself - make sure you are in Shaded mode, click and hold the middle mouse button and pan around without releasing it. Then press F3 while still panning to go into Wireframe mode and then release the middle mouse button. Now if you try to go back into Shaded by hitting F3 you can’t! Unless you manually go and change it through the viewport options in the top left corner of the viewport which is tedious. Clearly a bug since this…

  18. track view translation locks

    Track view translate keys left/right translate keys up/down features no longer work in 2012. CTRL drag locks still work.

  19. Nitrous viewports stop working

    Nitrous viewports frequently stop working under Windows 7 (64-bit). A guaranteed way to make this happen is to turn the monitor off and back on (using a monitor connected via HDMI or DisplayPort), but sometimes it happens during rendering as well (viewports no longer work after rendering is finished). Seems to happen more frequently if the user Alt+Tabs to another window or to the desktop. Currently, the only solution is to close Max and restart. Please add a menu option to reinitialize the viewports, so we can at least recover from this bug.

  20. Trajectories sub object selection broken by offset frame range

    When trying to select a key (subobject) on the trajectory to move it, if your timeline is offset the key selection will be off by that much. For example if you have a trajectory and have a key on frame 0, 5, 10 and your timeline is set to 2-100 when you click on and select the keyframe subobject on the trajectory for frame 5 it will actually move the object on frame 7.

    Probably a one or two line fix for a simple little thing to correct for the timeline offset.
