Small Annoying Things
PURPOSE
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that might benefit from a second look.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.
Feature ideas considered too big will simply be moved to the General Feature Requests forum; suggestions for new defaults should go into the Default Settings forum.
Add your vote to any idea if you also think this is an annoying behavior that needs to be fixed.
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

SDK/Scripting Enhancements
This forum is about improvements to the SDK or Script-related.

Off in viewport for PFlow
PFlow needs an Off in viewport button like it is in the modifier stack for any modifier. So you can set up the particle system, disable it in the viewport, continue working without loss of performance and finally render the scene without turning PFlow on again.

purge empty layers
Layers editor should have a purge empty layers option.

Polytools 'Drag' soft selection
Please make soft selection work with the freeform ribbon 'Drag' function.
The way it is now, we can SEE the soft selection, but it has no effect.30 votes -
Move transform position during move, scale and rotate
Although you can use the Working Pivot to achieve the same result it would be easier and quicker if we could select a hot key during any of the transforms to move the position of the transform origin to a new location.

hide incompatible material properties (for iray/Quicksilber)
e.g.: Many Arch&Design properties would be ignored by iray. These properties should be hide or grey-out in material editor if iray is the productive renderer.

make satellite timeout for mental ray DBR variable
3dsmax should ignore distributed bucket satellite host’s faster, if there are not online or IP is wrong.
IMHO the timeout should be variable set by the user in render dialog.

little purpose : Pre-visualization of edge cut (loop mode) like in C4D.

max files remembering project folders
When I open a maxfile, max should ask me if it should automatically point to the project folder from the file I opened

Render Elements save even when 'save rendered image' is off
when save rendered image is off then is should be disabled for render elements too.

Combine Open and Import file
When I want to open a new file and I set "See all files" I sometimes come across 3ds files. However, I cannot open them while in that "Open file browser" (At least not in 3ds max 2009. I have to close the "Open file browser", click the import function and I can only open 3ds through the import option. Why can't 3ds max automatically recognize a file extention and act accordingly through on "open file browser". Best thing would be to completely eliminate the import option and upgrade the open file option instead.

The mental ray displacement terminology should be the same throughout 3ds Max
In the render settings, mental ray displacement uses the term Max. Subdiv.. However, if you use the localized displacement settings (right click on an object and go to the object properties / mental ray / displacement...it's still using the Max. Level terminology from older versions. I have seen this trick users into thinking the settings were different somehow just because the names were different. I would unify the terminology to prevent confusion.

Prompt line
if you draw a line, you get all the measures displayed in the Prompt line, but if you activate snap on grid and draw, the XYZ infos overlays it very fast, anyway, the XYZ infos should be shown after the measures like it was before, this bugs since max 6 or 7.

remove missing maps
When you open a scene with a whole lot of maps missing, would Like a option to just REMOVE/DELETE that map from the scene.
or even in the Asset tracking, just a option to delete the map or file from the scene

Layer Manager - Newly created layers shouldn't be set to default
When creating a new layer it's incredibly annoying that it becomes the default. I'm constantly setting the default layer back after creating new layers.

Panorama exporter & linear workflow
If you're working in linear color space and using MR as your renderer, Architectural Material transitions in many areas (e.g. a carpet going from well-lit to sparsely-lit) will look choppy. The best way to describe it is the Posterize filter in Photoshop, which reduces the number of colors by grouping similar colors instead of using a dithering effect. This bug makes the panorama export tool useless in such situations.

Keyboard shortcut in tooltip
when I hover over a tool, e.g "Rotate", the tooltip says "Select and Rotate" It would be nice and easy to remember - especially for new users if it displayed the keyboard shortcut associated with that command - for example "Select and Rotate (E)" If the user changes that keyboard combination, the tooltip would update accordingly.

Volume Select - Soft Selection Consistency
The other selection modifiers (Mesh, Poly, etc) have options for Edge Distance and Affect Backfacing. These options are missing from the volume select modifier.
