Small Annoying Things
PURPOSE
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that might benefit from a second look.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.
Feature ideas considered too big will simply be moved to the General Feature Requests forum; suggestions for new defaults should go into the Default Settings forum.
Add your vote to any idea if you also think this is an annoying behavior that needs to be fixed.
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

error report submission opening browser window
My max crashes a lot. I don't need a "thank you" showing in a browser window ech time I fill error report.

We need a "remove viewport background" button
The only way to remove a reference to a bitmap viewport background that we don't use anymore is to use maxscript. Could we just add a button to the viewport background dialog to do this?

F3 + pan in Shaded mode = can't change back to Shaded mode
In Max 2012 if you enter Wireframe mode while panning you cannot go back to Shaded mode. Try it yourself - make sure you are in Shaded mode, click and hold the middle mouse button and pan around without releasing it. Then press F3 while still panning to go into Wireframe mode and then release the middle mouse button. Now if you try to go back into Shaded by hitting F3 you can’t! Unless you manually go and change it through the viewport options in the top left corner of the viewport which is tedious. Clearly a bug since this…

Preview selection - Ctrl while hovering should not append to selection
Holding down Ctrl + hovering over elements should not append to selection. Most people use Ctrl + left click to add to selection expecting to add to the selection only when they click a particular element and not adding the elements where the mouse hovered over.
Right now you must do shift + click in order to select without appending when the mouse goes over several elements and on top of that there is some awful distracting blinking if selecting edges.2 votes -
Smarter automatic number increase for new objects
If I have an object named Sphere001, and I shift-drag that object to clone it, the next object will be named Sphere002. But if the object is named something like Sphere001.collision, then the next object would be named Sphere001.collision001, which makes no sense. It should be smart enough to figure out that it should be Sphere002.collision. It shouldn't matter where those numbers are in the object's name.
Further, an object named Sphere01, will then be followed by Sphere002, adding a zero. It should also figure out the amount of digits I'm using based on the first object.

Mail 3dsmax users if ServicePack/HF available...
It's really annoying, that we 3dsmax user doesn't get a mail, if a new Hotfix/ServicePack is available!

Make the paths to missing bitmaps copy/pasteable
When you open a scene file and maps linked in the material editor, environment or elsewhere are missing max pops up a window showing the files that it's missing. So far, nice. Now the problem: If you want to search for the file in order to look for it (sometimes people convert files etc.) you have to write the name and path by hand because you just can't mark the paths for a quick CTRL/C-CTRL/V into your OS/asset tracking application/messenger-so-someone-can-look-it-up window. Should be easy to implement but help a lot.

Brief flicker of quad menus when desktop composition's enabled enabled (Windows 7)
When desktop composition is enabled in Windows 7 (and probably Vista), the quad menu lags when right-clicking the viewport (just long enough for it to constantly disrupt my workflow). Now, I'm opening the quad menu a LOT, so you can imagine what a pain this is every time.
For now, I have to disable and re-enable desktop composition from Window 7's "Performance Options", but it'd be REALLY nice to have this irritant fixed.

volume select morpher
Animated volume select will often not pass selection up the stack properly. Sometimes you need to goto the level of the VS and make sure you're at a point on the timeline that all the verts are selected to wake it up, then it will update properly. But only for a short time, so it needs to be pointcached to get around the problem.

Right click to Set or Remove Key Frames
Right click on a parameter within the modifier panel should allow you to set/remove/copy/paste keyframes.

Polygons should inherit smoothing group
When you create a new polygon, say by extrude, or just simply clicking an edge and shift-dragging out a polygon, it gets no smoothing group assignment by default.
So I find myself constantly extruding polygons, selecting them, then assigning a smoothing group.
It should just inherit the smoothing group of whichever polygon it originated from. In the case of a new polygon that was created without extrusion, it should get the group of its neighboring polygons.

Nitrous viewports stop working
Nitrous viewports frequently stop working under Windows 7 (64-bit). A guaranteed way to make this happen is to turn the monitor off and back on (using a monitor connected via HDMI or DisplayPort), but sometimes it happens during rendering as well (viewports no longer work after rendering is finished). Seems to happen more frequently if the user Alt+Tabs to another window or to the desktop. Currently, the only solution is to close Max and restart. Please add a menu option to reinitialize the viewports, so we can at least recover from this bug.

mrArch_DesignTemplates getting corrupted
This has been happening at least since Max 2009. The Arch & Design library becomes corrupted (even if it was never modified) and appears empty, although the file is still 200 kb. The only way to recover it is to reinstall Max, since Autodesk doesn't even have it available for download.

Switch to the last used transformation or selection tool and not to move when using cut, swift loop.
Switch to the last (Last used transformation or selection tool) and not to move when using cut, swift loop etc...
By default when using select tool -for example- and need to add swift loop after using the tool it doesn't switch me back to my last tool (select tool ) it switch me to move tool? why is that? even when using cut and some other tools
so please make ot switch to my last transformation or selction tool before using it12 votes -

Real world scale material previews too small
Real-world scale materials often show up at a very small scale in the material editor preview. This makes it very hard to create materials accurately. It would be nice if the scale of the preview ball/box/cylinder could be specified when working in real-world scale.

Let the welcome screen/recent files check for newer .max file versions.
If you open a recent file from the welcome screen or file menu (for example "Model 005.max"), there's no way to know if this file is the most recent. If a coworker saved "Model 006.max", you will be working in an old file. This can easily be fixed by checking for newer files (by version number) and adding an icon (like !) or some other kind of warning to the recent file name dialog.

Force the "help" menu at the end of the menu bar
Plugins with dropdown menus keep adding their stuff after the "help" menu. I would like 3ds Max to force the "help" menu to always appear at the end of the list.

Several UVW modifiers
If you place several UVW map modifier to your object (with different channels) the texture no longer displayed correctly. Now you cant move it and see how it moves because the top layers of UVW modifiers is on. You need to turn off this modifiers to see how you move the UVW
