Small Annoying Things
PURPOSE
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that might benefit from a second look.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.
Feature ideas considered too big will simply be moved to the General Feature Requests forum; suggestions for new defaults should go into the Default Settings forum.
Add your vote to any idea if you also think this is an annoying behavior that needs to be fixed.
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

Default lighting in viewport
1. Create the sun in the scene
2. Switch to the perspective view on the top view.
3. Switch to perspective view again

Rectangle vertices default as corners
As an ArchViz modeler, I go through this little sequence constantly:
1) Draw a rectangle
2) Right click, convert to Editable Spline
3) Go to vertex sub-object mode
3) Select all vertices
4) Right click and change vertices from bezier-corners to corners.I have hotkeys customized to help me speed through this process, but it would still be very helpful to have the vertices default as 'corners' when rectangle shapes are converted to editable splines, or when they are combined with other shapes by unchecking the 'start new shape' box.

Create objects on no layer
It is no so comfortable for me that object created are already in some marked layer. Do it like in maya that objects are not layer oriented all the time .

Walk speed control
Could the walk (footprints in lwr r.h. cnr of UI) please be more controllable with the arrows. The ] and [ keys for speed make it jump. It'd be awesome if the walkthrough were smooth like in AutoCAD, where you can specify the step size (e.g.500mm) and the steps per second for speed.

not closing merge / import dialog when clicking on nothing
If I don't click exactly on the object row in a blank area, the dialog closes itself and I must reopen the merge / import dialog again... The dialog should remains opened instead !

Right click on spinners ! (+ctrl/shift/alt)
Here are some additional functionality I think would be nice to have when right clicking spinners.
Normal right click = resets spinners to 0
Alt + right click = resets spinners to default values.
Ctrl + right click = copy

Make Preview larger then screen resolution
Make Preview allows only grab viewport that fits current screen resolution. Via scripted screen grabber we can grab viewport larger then screen resolution. It must be allowed with Make Preview.

symmetrical uv mapping.
to have symmetrical uv maps, we delete half of the mesh, use mirror modifier and then collapse and merge geo and flip the merged geo's uvs back to uv map symmetrically. huge time loss. it would really help if I could go and say to 3dsmax, in the unwrap uv window, use this edge loop as a mirror axis on the uv map bam! instant butterfly uvs.

Edged faces doesn't show properly in Nitrous!
Make the Edged wire bigger cuz it doesn't show all in Edged faces mode due to the pixel or wire is too small. but why directX works just fine?

Pin ribbon panels
When we drag the ribbon panels "into the workspace", there should be a pin button in the right black border (where we find 'toggle orientation' and 'return panel to ribbon').
When the panel is pinned it should stay there even if the (rest of the) ribbon is closed.
If it's unpinned while the ribbon is closed, the panel should just disappear, but reappear in the same position when the ribbon is opened again.
(PS : I use the ribbon as a floating window).

Graphite Ribbon tabs - mouse scroll wheel
Please make it possible to use the scroll wheel to switch between tabs anywhere in the ribbon, not just directly over the tab titles, like it is now.

Allow video files to act as a texture in a scene easily
In max 3,4 & 5 you could drop a video file (avi etc) into the material library & you could drag this onto an object in the scene to use it as an animated texture. I find normal textures need too much tweaking just for it to display correctly.

updating the license trouble
updating the license for autodesk 2012. max 2008 stops working but maya 2008 works. licensing server procedure not fool proof

pack uv's with respect to non-square texture space
Problem: select some objects, apply Unwrap,flatten mapping, change the texture space to something non-square - 512x256 for example.Scale the UV clusters to remove the stretching that occurs when changing the texture space dimensions, apply pack UVs. Watch the UVs getting stretched again.

No multi-selection for the Envelopes in Skin modifier
There is a script in Max can display all the envelops, but not available for our Skin modifier UI.

substance doesn't work in DBR
The Substance materials doesn't work in Mental Ray - Distributed Bucket Rendering :(

copy and paste xyz coordinates
Sometimes I need to move a vertex to an other vertex's position. But the source and the target vertices are not in the same object, so I can't use the align tool. I think the best way is two button near the coordinate spinners. A "copy coordinates" and a "paste coordinates" button.

Textures displayed wrongly on viewport when using some shaders
When turning on "realistic materials with maps" or "shaded materials with maps", the maps are shown like circles if you have use some shaders, like ambient occlusion.
It looks like the texture shown in the viewport is just a capture of the preview on the material editor.

Cloning Biped Animation Keys
Cloning biped animation keys (shift+drag) often doesn't work properly, especially with Xtra bones. With multiple bones selected often only a single bone gets its keys cloned.
