Small Annoying Things
PURPOSE
This forum is about all the little annoying quirks and problems in 3ds Max that you might have gotten used to over the years but that might benefit from a second look.
Remember, keep these ideas to tweaks of the workflow rather than large, sweeping changes to the tools. Try to imagine how much effort a programmer has to go into in order to implement your suggestion. Anything requiring major UI changes or new UI dialogs will need to go in another forum.
Feature ideas considered too big will simply be moved to the General Feature Requests forum; suggestions for new defaults should go into the Default Settings forum.
Add your vote to any idea if you also think this is an annoying behavior that needs to be fixed.
HOW TO USE THE FORUM
- Each user has 20 votes for each forum
- Each idea can have no more than 3 votes by a single user
- If you enter an idea, it will cost you 1 vote – therefore try to make sure the idea doesn’t already exist
- The more precise and detailed a description you give, the more likely your idea will rise higher in the list
- When an idea is implemented, votes are returned to all the users that voted
- User can change their votes at any time
- Admins can move, edit and delete ideas as they see fit to better meet the goals of the forum
- We will flag ideas that are getting our attention as “under review”. Because of limits on what we can say publicly, that is as far as we can go with commenting on a particular idea. If it is “under review” it simply means we’re studying it for possible implementation or gathering data, but there is no commitment to do it.
Remember, we do not release versions on “internet time”. Unlike the web sites this was designed for, our process of releasing functionality is much longer term. So there won’t be a constant churn of ideas being “closed out” by us and votes returned to you. For this tool to map to our process, we will be looking at the data during a short period of the year (3-6 months) and deciding what actions to take after that. Don’t expect to post an idea and a month later for us to respond in some fashion to it. The most likely scenario is that you’ll post an idea and if a lot of other people vote on it, we’ll eventually flag it as “under review” – but that could be 9 months later or longer.
Please treat this as an experiment in working with the community. Even if Uservoice is not the final home for this, we’ll do our best to export all the ideas to whatever future system might take its place. Your voice will persist.
Note: It’s important to realize that these lists are simply raising the quality of the feedback we get from the community. They are not a replacement for how we define the features for any given release. They are valuable input, but beta input, product strategy, focus, innovation and other factors are also important aspects we consider.

morph keyframes are all grey !
When i animate morph, all the keyframes have the same color, grey.
I can't tell if this key frame is from the the smile, blink, or whatever...
can i colorize each key morph with a different color???
Maybe if we can apply color on each layer of morph, this color could be applied automatically on his own keyframe.8 votes -
Rotate local axis/Pivot
Make it possible to REALLY rotate the local coordinate-system of an object. So it has an impact on extrude direction, loft axis etc.

Lock camera
Whilst looking through cameras, I often pan or rotate by accident. I'd like the ability to lock cameras and restrict all translations totally. As far as I'm aware, current methods of freezing or locking translations currently still allows the camera to be moved whilst looking through it.

Render Elements doesn't work with Relative Output Paths
Render Elements output doesn't understand relative paths and returns an error and rendering can't proceed, causes problem with network rendering.

zooming by wheels afected by side panels
1. When "assign controler" from Motion panel is visible.

Add Name Field and Color Pick Swatch to Ribbon
Especially if the eventual goal is to continue porting command panel functions to the ribbon, we need the object naming field and wirecolor picker to be accessible right there. Currently, if the Command Panel is minimized, there is no immediate location to rename/recolor. Then accessing the command panel shows inconsistencies in the location of the naming field between the different panels (create vs. motion, modify, etc...)

Consistent Object Name Field and Color Picker
Move the object name text field and initial wirecolor picker up to the top of the create tab in the command panel (like every other tab)....look at the modify panel, or motion panel, or any panel other than the create panel, and the name field is right at the top. In the create tab, the name field cannot be moved to match the other panels. It should be consistent throughout.

Cut tool leaves leaves stray vertices
The cut tool gives you a preview with a changing icon to tell you whether you are connecting to a face, edge of vertex. Problem is, it isn't always telling the truth. You think you are connecting to a vertex only to later discover that you just missed it and therefore created the cut in the face near the vertex resulting in extra unwanted vertices. The preview icon is not in sync with what actually happens. I find I resort to turning on vertex snap but it should work as advertised.

Composite Map layer order
Please! make the layer order in the Slate Node the same as in Parameter Editor.
I work with the composite map since it was integrated and it confuses me until today.3 votes -
3dsmax should accept "," and "." as decimal separator
IMHO it would be good if we can insert values with "," or with "." as decimal separator.

Get rid of pointless Load Custom UI nag
If you go to Customize > Load Custom UI Scheme and then cancel, you still get a nag about the UI Scheme Settings taking effect after the next reset. If you're just canceling out of the dialog, the nag is unnecessary.

edge and face selection improvements
Hello the shift and select feature is great to select loops and rings of faces and edges but i think this could be even better.
I proposed this ones to Carl Mikael Lagnecrantz from polyboost.
It would be great to get the step loop function get part of this shift click feature.
lets say i shift select 2 faces or edges beside each other and he creates a loop or ring.
If i would shift select 2 faces or edges later it would just step loop to the selected face or edge. In this way you could select very specific…13 votes -
Polydraw extend tool "move vertice in screenspace"
this annoys me quite some time
i was a user of the old polyboost and since the polydraw tools are included in max i miss especially an important function in the extend mode.In the polyboost border tool you been able to move vertices in screen space by clicking alt + ctrl.
In the new extend tool this is used to create a new poly in between two edges and no other shortcut got reserved for this old and useful function.The whole purpose of the extend tool is kind of destroyed cause you need to move back and forth…

Connect edges slide value should be float instead of integer
When I need to connect edges in an editable poly object, an integer value for sliding is not enough. Usually I need to enter a float value (e.g. 50,12), but it's not possible.

track view translation locks
Track view translate keys left/right translate keys up/down features no longer work in 2012. CTRL drag locks still work.

Create Texts Bigger Option
Go Application Button > Option
UI Display group under General Tab, provide Drop-down list of "Text Size"

don't merge empty layers...
If you merge some objects from a other max file, max will merge all layers and not only the layers from the merged objects.

When the grid is active the corresponding grid views should be set by default
Whenever I work using grids I need to use the grid views front, back etc.. To me it would make the workflow easier if the default front, back, side views switched to the grid views when the grid is active. Similar to the UCS in AutoCAD.

Rename clone of rendered image
It would be nifty to be able to rename the cloned render window. This would help while you optimize renderings and doing testrenderings.

Combine object and polygon level Unhide All/Hide Unselected
Right now there are two different sets of hiding. One is for objects, one is for polygons. But they're both named the exact same thing. Max should be smart enough to pick the right one by default. If I'm working with polys, it should just hide unselected polygons, if I'm in object mode, it should hide unselected objects. Likewise for unhide.
