Importing CAD Data in 3ds Max

Please help us identify and prioritize enhancement requests for anything related to importing CAD data into 3ds Max or 3ds Max Design. Note: this is covering any CAD software or format, whether it is created by Autodesk or not.

Describe what is needed for the best possible CAD import workflow

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  2. Add drawing cleanup commands e.g. OVERKILL to AutoCAD import

Maybe this is related to http://3dsmaxfeedback.autodesk.com/forums/76187-importing-cad-data-in-3ds-max/suggestions/3091460-dont-allow-max-to-create-hundreds-of-vertices-when

It should be exist some drawing cleanup commands in DWG importer like AutoCAD OVERKILL, FLATTEN etc.

This is important to get a cleaner import for user how doesn't have access to AutoCAD...

  3. add scale factor to STL/STP import dialog

Add a scale factor to every import dialog, because imported BodyObjects (Hirachy Linked) can't be scaled with e.g. "rescale world units"

  4. Option to import Autodesk materials from Revit as Standard materials instead.

When we import Revit files we don´t always want them to have the Autodesk materials since we very often want to substitute them for A&D or Standard materials instead (for different purposes). A choice to import as 3D Studio Max Standard material would be great so we don´t have to go through the tedious task of recreating the materials over and over again.

  5. Scale of textures is screwed upp when importing or linking Revit files in metric units.

We are experiencing lots of trouble importing Revit files with textures. The textures will not come through correctly although both Revit and 3D Studio Max is set to metric units. This is very annoying and a must fix to support a good workflow between Revit and Max! Please fix!

  6. Suport Levels For ACA constructs

When Importing AutoCad Architecture constructs I would like to see levels supported, or at least an option to import with an offset from 0,0,0.

  7. Import models as quad meshes

To simplify optimisation of models for various purposes and to reduce polys in a scene, there should be the option to process the import as a quad mesh. To manually optimise the model is very time consuming. which usually involves complete rebuild using the base mesh as reference. Would be a good way to bring cad models into Mudbox then.

  8. Inventor models imported should have constraints assigned in the form of hierarchy links instead of groups

Currently Inventor models come across in groups. If this came across as linked objects then it would be a very good starting point for animation. Groups are no good for animating parts.

  9. Autodesk Materials should come across with correct scaling and orientation

Materials from particularly Inventor don't come across with correct scaling and orientation. There also appears to be different mapping differences between importing as a mesh or body object. They produce different results.

  10. I dont think there is a problem.... You need to know the right workflow.

Interoperability between software within Autodesk is amazing.

What you need is the knowledge of how you can get a clean mesh from any 3d software into 3ds Max. Does not matter if its autocad, catia, solid edge, inventor or even alias..

You need to know how to control tessellation and conversion and all this can be already with Autodesk Showcase. So for me it isn't what can Autodesk change in workflow. think its a case of understanding what is already there and use it to the best ability possible.

    Cheers

    Daniel :)

  11. Navisworks import for Max

Navisworks should have better import for Max. I normally use via ZGL, but there is too much cleaning up manually. FBX is very slow currently. I'm opening simple factory layout 12 hours for now and have 85% complete.

  12. dont allow Max to create hundreds of vertices when importing AutoCAD ellipses and splines into Max.

I was told by an Autodesk employee that the math used to create ellipses and splines in Autocad is different than Max's math code. Which is why an Autocad created ellipses import with too many vertices into Max. The two programs should be able to exchange these types of lines with no problems, period. It's 2013 and this issue should've been addressed by an upper level management Autodesk employee that works closely with several Autodesk programs to oversee this interoperability problem. It appears as if no one of that level of management is reading these feedback forums? Please tell me…

  13. Support coordinate offsets for Import and Export of CAD data

We need a way to support data offsets when working with double precision CAD data built in a geo-referenced coordiante space such as State Plane. This would ensure that the user would not experience precision errors on the imported CAD data and allow the user to work in a local coordiante system in 3ds Max. This offset function should also support data exported from 3ds Max to ensure accurate placement in applications such as C3D, AIM, Navisworks and others.

  18. enhanced the way to import CAD data (convert Body Objects to good meshes)

We have Body Objects and can import CAD data via inventor IAM, IPT or IGES, STL via "DirectConnect Support"

The BodyObjects was added to 3dsmax and it seems that they never be enhanced. Maybe AD can't develop further, because it's only a external, licensed software part from npower. See: http://area.autodesk.com/forum/t65573

This "idea" is about to give us a better way to import CAD data and get clean mesh/poly objects. See also: http://area.autodesk.com/forum/264071
